To be angry at my PILs for feeding DS (9 months) a frozen pea?

I was cooking and my in-laws were holding my DS. I had measured out some frozen peas, and looked up to find them putting one in DS's mouth. I freaked out a bit, as I would think this would be a big choking hazard. They said it was fine and safe etc. DS eventually spat out the pea.

Am I being over protective (had just completed a baby first aid course, so I had a heightened awareness of danger) or are they being unreasonable? And how am I supposed to trust them to babysit if they do things like that?

At nine months i would have thought he was eating almost everything, crawling round the garden eating alsorts of crap, slugs, dirt, don't worry about a pea.

OrangeFish · 29/06/2009 13:29

I think that one day you will look back to this situation and would say "and to think I initiated a thread on Mumsnet because the inlaws gave my son a... frozen pea!"

porcupine11 · 29/06/2009 13:29

nah he can't crawl yet & garden is a building site

when he does, should i worry about slugs as a choking hazard?

ah OrangeFish, but the purpose of Mumsnet is surely that you can say dumb things without having to do it in real life?!

My friend's 9 month old was eating my rabbit's poo off the grass in the garden recently (till we spotted him and stopped him) so I think a frozen pea is fine. (He is a third child btw).

However with my PFB I would have been just the same as you! LOL It is fine really... TBH he is probably eating mushed up proper food anyway isn't he?

i guess so... but it's hard to get your head around someone else deciding what to put in your baby's mouth. TBH I'm still too protective of my sisters, who are 27 and 28, so there is no hope for DS!

YABVU but think you've realised that , if a frozen pea is the worst thing that your PFB ever puts in his mouth or has put in his mouth for him, you'll be doing very well.

Slugs are a bit too slimy I think, dd2 tried to pick one up, it never made it as far as her mouth as the texture was enough to put her off!

MarmadukeScarlet · 29/06/2009 13:35

Slugs slip[ down v easily, no choking hazard there - but snails are the ones to worry about...

shootfromthehip · 29/06/2009 13:36

Is this a wind up? My DD choked on a large, raw mushroom at 9 mths but a pea would have presented very little challenge!

YABVU.

OrangeFish · 29/06/2009 13:36

Oh yes, it is... I have initiated thread even because my son decided to take a bite at the toilet lid...

IkeaCatalogue · 29/06/2009 13:38

bless you porcupine

those of us who are laughing quietly at you have done stuff equally bonkers with our first borns

here is the evidence

porcupine11 · 29/06/2009 13:42

Ikea - I might have to leave my thread alone now and read that one for the next 20 mins...

YABU a frozen pea is not a choking hazard for a 9 month old. A frozen pea will soon soften.

Northernlurker · 29/06/2009 15:46

Oooh always nice to be reminded of the flight madness reality

Op - very well done, how lovely to read an AIBU where the OP embraces the answers

IkeaCatalogue · 29/06/2009 15:56

[rolls eyes]

onepieceofcremeegg · 29/06/2009 19:17

May I just add that I have read the packet of my (Tesco Value) frozen peas and it says

"do not eat raw" !

Anyone know why?

OP you have been great btw.

Morloth · 29/06/2009 19:23

LOL at 9mths DS was happily knawing lambchops down to the bone while I sorted out our dinner.

You have to let it go or you are going to drive yourself (and him) crazy).

Northernlurker · 29/06/2009 20:12

Onepiece - well obviously it's because you have to 'Give peas a chance'

I'll get my coat....
