To be increasingly annoyed about the amount of MN's who feel it is OK to correct one's spelling and grammar

I am getting really fed up of it.

Someone will post a topic and then you get some "up you own backside" MN'er who takes it upon themselves to correct all of the grammar and spelling in said post.

This happens in particular in threads of a contraversial nature as a means of embarrasing the OP. It is ridiculous.

This is a talk forum, not an English exam so to all those MN'ers........get a life!!!!

So, are we all friends again now?

I am never going to finish my bloody work if I keep ranting.

whocaresaboutyourintellect · 26/06/2009 17:38

ME - I am here but felt I had proved my point with my first and only post.

I have however, read the entire thread throughout the day.

Had I posted more on the subject, I am sure the same posters would take it upon themselves to correct that post aswell.

Posters like you ME! My point has been made I think!

Well, I apologise for doubting you OP, but as I said, I don't make a habit of correcting other posters, so judge away!

motherinferior · 26/06/2009 17:43

I've said before: it does rather depend on how you see the writing medium, the one we're all communicating in here. I came to MN to gawp and possibly snigger (this was over six years ago now) and then was absolutely hooked by the fact it was full of bright witty women writing bright witty stuff.

MIAonline · 26/06/2009 17:44

The best friends are the ones you can debate and disagree with midnight..

motherinferior · 26/06/2009 17:45

Oh, and I don't correct. But do possibly opine.

Mintyy · 26/06/2009 17:47

Thanks frAKKIN. Am pleased to know .

BlueberryPancake · 26/06/2009 20:13

It's funny, English is not my first language and when I have a fight with my (English) husband he always find a way to 'correct' my grammar in the middle of it. I think it's the same thing happening here, it's a very obvious tactic to embarrass the author. I think that MNters should understand that not everyone here is native English speaker, unless maybe you don't want us here.

applepudding · 26/06/2009 22:19

I think that correct spelling/grammar are important in a professional situation; and that schools really need to do a better job of teaching such things - e.g. yes, teachers should correct children's spelling and grammar.

However - I do think it is very rude for one adult to correct another in a chatroom situation.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 27/06/2009 20:28

MI I get that but I ws already here when you started, presumably typing fine as nobody commented on it

So over the years my eyes have faded somewhat and now I get comments

How likely is it my spelling ahs deteriorated LOL? Esp. as i;ve spent 4 of those yeras studying!

Qally · 27/06/2009 21:01

Peachy - nooo, I was genuinely grateful! I swear I have aphasia or something these days - began when I was pregnant, and right now I often forget how I began a sentence by the time I've reached the end, never mind malapropisms.

drowninginclutter · 27/06/2009 21:42

YANBU It's not a celebration of stupidity but a recognition of the sleep deprivation of the average poster. I often write in a hurry and press post message because I've heard DS waking from a nap, rather than because I've actually re-read and am happy with my post.

People should be able to join in the forum without always feeling they are being marked by other posters.

I love the fact MN is easy to read because most people avoid txtspk and make their posts legible but unless you're in pedants' corner any corrections should be kept as a mental note. Correcting where it has no place in the discussion is rude.

It has happened to me so I am a little bitter

pickyvic · 27/06/2009 21:47

me too...and within my first couple of posts. it really pissed me off. especially when i checked the person who corrected me to find a million errors in their own posts.... i thought what a twunt....get your own bloody house in order before correcting mine!

junglist1 · 27/06/2009 22:00

pickyvic, if I'm corrected I always correct back childishly

BecauseImWorthIt · 28/06/2009 08:41

Maybe we should have a list of the correct spellings of the words most often spelt incorrectly, up with the acronyms - so that new posters know what to avoid at their peril?

I can't help but cringe when I see bad spelling and poor apostrophe usage, but I really wouldn't correct the poster 99% of the time. I confess to having to done it to one horrible poster who was deliberately winding posters up. But I felt very embarrassed and ashamed afterwards - I had stooped to her level.

I think this is a really interesting post about communication and language usage, and it sums up, for me, one of the great joys of MN. Spirited and intelligent debate - however we spell or punctuate.

purepurple · 28/06/2009 08:44

YANBU
I feel very sad for the people who have nothing better to do than correct other people's spelling and grammar mistakes.

What sad, lonely lives they must all lead.
