To think we should be able to call the baby our choice of name?

I am currently 6.4 months preganant with 5th DC. We have several names lined up, but for a girl, we really love the name 'Ella Rose'. The problem is our surname will really clash with this and relatives (namely both DH and my parents), are really going crazy saying we will put our DC through a life of misery if we name her Ella, but we are determined to stick with our choice. They are all praying it is a boy!

Other 'girls name' choices are listed below, so please tell us what you think, but Ella is our very favourite!

Kate Rose
Freya
Mariella
Adrienne
Henrietta
Violetta
Isobel
Gracie
Emilia Grace

I love Ella - it's my daughter's name - but agree it isn't so fab with your surname. Ella-Rose would work - then you could just call her Ella but 'officially' she would have the Rose to break the Ella and Olla.

stop feeding the name troll!

Its last thread was whether to call its children Benidorm or Majorca.

Pennybubbly · 25/06/2009 06:09

I'm going to go against the grain and say go with Ella. TBH it's your surname that is a mouthful and its going to continue to be a mouthful whatever the first name. (sorry).(I'm allowed to be rude cause I've got the most horrific surname in the world thanks to hubby and as a result still not changed my name even though we got married 7 years ago!).
At least it rolls off the tongue (several times admittedly) and how many times do you actually verbally give your full name when you're a kid? (she may well change it if/when she gets married).
She might just get known as Ella O in time!

Pheebe · 25/06/2009 08:10

Actually I think Ella Ollerenshaw sounds fine to me, almost poetic. Maybe thats because I went to school with someone with the same surname. Doesn't sound odd or out of place to me at all. Her first name was Tracey and she had a sister Louise.

If YOU are worried perhaps you could use Ella-Rose as a single name.

MamaLazarou · 25/06/2009 08:41

You and your DH should agree on a name, to be fair. So if he really hates Ella, you should try to compromise.

MamaLazarou · 25/06/2009 08:43

Oh - I didn't notice the OP's name.

Marbella indeed. A likely story.

Why does this forum have so many joke threads? It's annoying.

memoo · 25/06/2009 09:37

isn't marbella a tacky holiday resort in spain?

Trikken · 25/06/2009 09:57

Ella is too much like marbella for my liking.

Trikken · 25/06/2009 10:00

What are the other two children called? just for comparison.

MamaLazarou · 25/06/2009 10:03

The imaginary children are called 'Cklarah' and 'Marbella'.

katiestar · 25/06/2009 10:05

Would probably stay clear of Emilia Grace too
Having the initials EGO might not be everyones cup of tea !

jellybeans · 25/06/2009 10:15

It's abit of a mouthful. Think maybe it's abit much. Would it be Ella-Rose or mainly just Ella? Double barrelled sounds/looks better.

Kate Rose ....like
Freya....ok
Mariella....mouthful again with surname
Adrienne...dislike
Henrietta....dislike
Violetta...dislike
Isobel...love
Gracie....love
Emilia Grace ....dislike

Trikken · 25/06/2009 10:22

on her profile it says she has four children, so I was wondering what the other two were called so we could see how they go.

2rebecca · 25/06/2009 10:25

I'd avoid a first name that is 2 names stuck together like Ella Rose as it will get shortened to Ella or Elly. Strangers eg doctors, dentists will think Rose is her middle name when calling her and children will find Ella Rose too much of a mouthful to call her it regularly. If your surname clashes with Ella then call her something else.
Parents who insist on calling their kids by 2 names always sound like they are in The Waltons to me. "night night John Boy" "Night night Ellie May" or whatever.
Freya and Isobel are my favourites of those on the list. Suspect a Henrietta would have the piss taken out of her up here.

gagamama · 25/06/2009 10:26

I'm still trying to work out how many weeks 6.4 months pregnant is.

2rebecca · 25/06/2009 10:32

Agree no-one ever says 6.4 months, they use whole or half months or weeks, and the kids names do sound like jokes, but then some people have strange ideas re kids names.

Trikken · 25/06/2009 10:32

24 weeks 1 day and 6 hours?

katiestar · 25/06/2009 10:39

What about just 'Kate' ,short,Hard 'clean' sounding consonants to balance out the long surname with softer sounds
'kate Ollenshaw' sounds classy, capable and confident -I like it a lot ! (but then not my DD)

Stigaloid · 25/06/2009 10:49

Sorry - how does it clash? I think it sounds nice Ella Ollerenshaw.

Ella seems to be a very popular name these days - i know of about 6 born in the last 2 years.

2rebecca · 25/06/2009 12:08

Do you want your sprog to have a "very popular" name though. I've aimed for names that are common enough that people know how to spell them and don't say "What?" when you mention your child's name, but not so common there is likely to be more than 1 in a class.

gagamama · 25/06/2009 12:21

Good work, Trikken.

Ella Ollerenshaw does have an air of Soren Lorensen about it. In more ways than one, actually.

DrunkenDaisy · 25/06/2009 12:25

I like Ella Ollerenshaw. I think its fab.
