To hate school sports day and not want to go?

FlyMeToDunoon · 23/06/2009 19:04

This will be my fifth sports day and I know what it will be like.
I will arrive, slightly stressed and late having prised DDs 2 and 3 away from DVD of Kipper/Baby Bratz/The Lord of The Rings [at a scary bit. 'Who the @*^ put this on?]
Front two rows at the edge of the sports field will be populated by the PTA mafia with folding chairs, coffee, sunshades, cameras and immaculate DCs
It will be blazing sunshine in which case I will have forgotten my sunglasses and will get a headache.
Or it will be drizzling in which case I will have forgotten an umbrella and DDs raincoats.
DD1's class will be running in the last event which is in two hours time.
But I won't know that because nobody tells you these things.
DD's 2 and 3 will spend their time asking for drinks, food, sweets anything really that I haven't got.
DD3 will invade the field at least 3 times.
DD1 will come last and cry and come running across the field to me.
Can I stay at home please?

I shall just put a damper on this by saying I wish I could go to my dcs sports day tomorrow and so do they.

Stupid school only gave us 2 weeks notice and I have to go to work missed it lst year for the same reason. I'm preparing to miss it next year too.

(Yes I have pointed out to the school that more than 2 weeks notice would be helpful got the usual telling of in the reply)

Although I did enjoy your description flyme I now feel like I've been!

Pretend you have a job next year. I've only made an occasional sports day and my parents rarely came to mine. Never bothered me as a kid, I was too busy chatting to my friends. One year my mum got the afternoon off as a surprise and was upset I didn't notice she was there. i think attending this sort of school event is more important to some mums than the kids or dads.

Cammelia · 24/06/2009 10:31

Flyme, your sports day sounds exactly like my sports day - are your children at private school?

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/06/2009 11:47

DD is in a state primary. The area is hoaching with yummy mummies though.
I have asked DD if she would mind if I didn't come this year and she actually says she doesn't.
So I have a get out.
Yay!

1delemma - what did they say when they told you off? Surely they could give you a bit more notice; it's not as though they don't know about it!

YANBU - they are a waste of time.

LIZS · 24/06/2009 12:49

yanbu, I loathe it. One down, one to go this time round.ds is down to do several races (hurdles, 100m , 400m) and the teacher selecting for some reason hasn't realised he just can't run, let alone run and jump ! Poor kid should I have a word ?

gingertoo · 24/06/2009 12:55

There was a couple of dads at our sports day doing warm ups and stretches just before the dad's race!

Greensleeves · 24/06/2009 12:58

I am dreading ours. I have one in reception and one in year 1, they are 24 months apart in age but only one year apart at school and this sort of thing is guaranteed to bring out the beastliest kind of rivalry

had a note yesterday saying "Foundation and KS1 sports day - if you have more than one child involved you may take them around the activites together" Oh, happy happy joy joy

I hated sports' day when I was at school and I dare say I will hate it in the future too! YUCK YUCK YUCK!

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/06/2009 13:01

DD1 was in the skipping race about 3 years ago. She hadn't yet got the hang of skipping and it was just complete humiliation for her.
Mum's race is taken much more seriously here.

Much more seriously than dad's race I mean.

Both of my boys suffer terribly with hayfever, so I often get out of such events!

ChopsTheDuck · 24/06/2009 13:20

ours is awful. First we'll have to park a mile fromt eh school because the road will resemble a 4x4 motor show. The we have to negotiate the Pimms and strawberries tent, cake sale, weird jazzy mareshmallows on sticks taht make the dts go hyper. You lot are moanign about a mums and dads race - at ours they have flipping tug of war!!!

We also do the moving around the field, so you cant even get the picnic out til the end. I think you'd get shot if you tried to take greggs!

I'm dreading it. Ds1 will come last in everything while the yummy mummys snigger and point because they don't realise he is disabled and in pain. Aaargh! Maybe I will take my VERY OWN bottle of pimms all for ME!

Cammelia · 24/06/2009 13:31

The one saving grace at ours is that there are NO parents races

Oh hang on, though, we did have a toss the caber competition for the Dads though

Dh came second

Cammelia · 24/06/2009 13:33

The biggest tosser was a friend of ours

Scottish

As opposed to dh's partial scottishness

TheCrackFox · 24/06/2009 13:51

I hated sports day when I was a kid as I was crap at everything.

Now I have the pleasure of watching my son "compete" ashe has taken after me.

Hated sports day with a vengance when I was at school; can't see me enjoying DD's any more than I did mine. The highlight of the day was always the father's race as one of the dads was a commonwealth games gold medalist. It was the one race that didn't drag on for all eternity...

Cadelaide · 24/06/2009 14:10

I like sports day. I like seeing DCs at school, and all the kids cheering on their houses.

I do get a bit teary when there's one child miles behing taking hours to finish tho' (last yr it was DS in the egg and spoon).

LyraSilvertongue · 24/06/2009 14:18

I like sports day. It only goes on for about an hour, there's none of this standing in rows, no strawberries or fizz, just weak coffee available at the pavilion.
This year though DSs 1&2 will both be in it so I'll have to cut myself in two or miss some of their races.

Indiechick · 24/06/2009 15:31

I'm really looking forward to my dd's. It is my first one though. I've been briefed to take picnic and I'm so competitive I'm actually looking forward to the mum's race. Just worried I've no-one to mind the baby whilst I'm running and think that pushing a buggy in front might hamper my chances of winning. I'll let you know if my view changes on Wed!

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 24/06/2009 19:10

As we have now had our sports day I can confirm it was both exhiliarating and humiliating. DS won and thar was good but in dad race DH pulled his hamstring whilst he was winning and hobbled off! Needless to say I didn't take part in the mum's race
