Dawn chorus, more like the royal philharmonic outside the window......

Birds have many different calls, there are territory calls, wake up "good morning" calls, and distress calls....

I certainly know my chaffinchs' distress calls and it generally means that next doors' cat is patrolling and looking for baby birds from the nest...

I'd certainly start shouting if someone was coming to eat my babies

What is the "I have a sleep deprived mad woman trying to shoot me with a bow and arrow" call?

oh that reminds me, I need to check in our loft. I'm sure that pigeons have somehow got in and made a nest. At 4am this morning they were making such a racket in our eaves.

pigeon pie.

Bloody Derek. He was up at 5 this morning making a "You don't have to be mad to work here but it helps" sign to put on the nest where his babies are being brought up.

No, no, no, stealthsquiggle - send him the number for a theatrical agent, then he can get work in panto and on cheep game shows - and he'll be able to get his own place and leave seeker in peace!!

I see him as the next Christopher Biggins.....

stealthsquiggle · 24/06/2009 09:27

The BBC, maybe - he could be a guest presenter on Springwatch?

WowOoo · 24/06/2009 09:27

They're too damn chirpy but I do actually love the noise and it's preferable to someone mowing the lawn at 6:30, YES 6 bloody 30 on a Saturday morning.

Crows annoy me. Seagulls freak me out as I think I can hear a baby crying at times.

I would LOVE to be able to hear Derek the cuckoo. You lucky lucky people...

Stayingsunnygirl · 24/06/2009 09:30

He might steal the show from Bill Oddie, stealthsquiggle!

Stayingsunnygirl · 24/06/2009 09:30

Or he could go on tour, and make Wowooo his first stop!

stealthsquiggle · 24/06/2009 09:37

Can I send the baby sparrows (they're threatened, too, apparently ) on tour with Derek as a support act? WowOoo you'd like them! We could also contribute a selection of Jackdaws as a rhythm section ("Jackjack" is all they say, but they say it a lot) - and maybe a guest appearance from the buzzards, who 'mew' like kittens?

Not so noisy but exceptionally cute is the baby woodpecker who sits on top of the telegraph pole and waits for his parents to fetch him peanuts from the feeder .

spiggy · 24/06/2009 09:55

One of our local birds sounds like it is shouting "mammy, daddy, mammy, daddy" at stupid o'clock in the morning which means either me of DP getting up to check if DS is shouting for us.

Of course it deliberately waits till we have just got to sleep after DD has been up for real.

Yes, send them all to me!

But no magpies please. Or jackdaws for that matter. Sorry - that is bird-ist, but I only like the nice sounding ones.

seeker · 24/06/2009 13:37

Derek's Tour Bus is on it's way.

You'll recognize it by the sight of him mooning oh-so-amusingly out of the back window.

Juwesm · 24/06/2009 13:48

Don't worry! What with it being 3 days past the equinox, the nights are now officially drawing in, and they'll be starting later and later!

FuriousGeorge · 24/06/2009 21:14

I feel your pain.We have a couple of very screechy owls, horrid woodpigeons, and various other squawkers keeping us awake at present. Not forgetting someone in our lane who started using a circular saw at 6.30am yesterday! If I vfind out who it was,it'll be my turn with the saw........
