To let DD eat sushi

helpmegetthisrightplease · 20/06/2009 16:22

DD loves Japanese food and I occassionally take her to a Japanese resturant that does a buffet (set price to take as many dishes as you like off a conveyer belt).

She loves it including the sushi. We went today and I heard a couple of women loudly commenting how wrong it is to let a small child eat sushi as they cant digest raw fish.

Now I'm wondering if its alright to let her (she's 3+7). She's been eating it on ocassion for about a year and always really enjoyed it. am I wrong to let her?

everything you could ever want to know about oily fish etc but nothing about sushi...

Oooh good call sm...

As long as she is potty trained, no problem. We had to institute a "no raw fish for nappy wearing children" in our house rule after one memorable lunch out. I still gag just remembering...

The boy has been eating sushi/sashimi since he was old enough to chew it.

With all these rules it is astonishing we are not all dead.

LOL.Don't worry. I find that the majority of people are unaware of the difference, and I wouldn't expect them to know.

The women who made those comments are the ignorant ones.

my DCs love sushi and are very partial to Yo Sushi, but mostly because they love the conveyor belt/help yourself to water/buzzers that make a funny noise

i rather like their soft shell crab in seaweed hand roll

am sure it is not terribly authentic, but it is nice ,and probably healthier than burger/pizza etc

people do love judging, especially young children eating poncetastic food

katiestar · 20/06/2009 18:31

I wouldn't do it because I would be worried about the dangers of food poisoning and parasites.

Oh dear. DC have been having sushi and sashimi since they were one ... (I blame it on all those guides that say they can "join in family meals when they are 12 months old".)

ginormoboobs · 20/06/2009 18:59

YANBU
Both of mine love sushi. Our is the stuff from supermarkets so it's mainly tuna , salmon, trout and prawns.
They have both been eating it since they were old enough to demand it when they were under 1yo
They polished off a pack of smoked salmon the other day and I can assure you that it was digested because I changed DS's nappy lol
Then again I did give both of mine meduim/rare steaks and venison at 6 months because they asked for it so I may not be the best person to give an opinion

Morloth · 20/06/2009 19:03

I don't think I have ever worried about food poisoning or parasites for anyone in the family, not even when pregnant/breastfeeding or feeding a baby.

Just normal food hygeine and eating what looks/tastes good appears to work, we have never had a problem and we travel a lot.

Morloth · 20/06/2009 19:05

ginormoboobs when DS was just getting his teeth we gave him really rare meat cause it was easier to chew. He still likes it almost mooing.

Basic rule of the thumb for mercury levels I think is the bigger the fish, the higher the levels of mercury, as it concentrates all the heavy metals absorbed by anything below it in the food chain. So tuna, shark, swordfish etc have the highest levels. None of us should be eating these fish more than once a week. And now, with extinction beckoning for most species of tuna, we have even more reason for cutting down.

lucykate · 20/06/2009 19:42

we went for sushi for ds's birthday treat last month, dc's are 4 and 7, both loved the whole experience and the food.

Rachmumoftwo · 20/06/2009 19:49

My DD loves sushi too. She was with DH in Tesco and bought some for a snack. Being a bit of a chatty girl, she told the checkout girl she was about to eat some sushi. The girl looked at her and said (scathingly according to DH) 'do you know what it is?' to which DD happily replied 'raw fish and I love it.'

So proud

hercules1 · 20/06/2009 19:51

except it's not raw fish!!!!!

CMOTdibbler · 20/06/2009 19:59

DS has been enjoying Yo Sushi (and anywhere else he can get his grubby little fingers on sushi/sashimi) since he was 6 months old. Admittedly then it was more cucumber rolls and smoked salmon rolls, but now at 3 he happily chooses from the belt himself with no adult intervention

Divatheshopaholic · 20/06/2009 20:03

why name change
my children 4y and 22m eat korean/japanese meal all the time.

sushi most certainly is raw fish (at least in part). The most popular kinds are anyway. The only ones that are cooked are prawns, california rolls (containing those fish protein sticks).

Sushi = rice + fish (or veg or egg or whatever)
Sashimi = fish without rice

In your typical supermarket sushi set you'd expect to find raw salmon, raw tuna, cooked prawns and perhaps some raw cucumber.

choccynutter · 20/06/2009 20:59

what a load of crap I never heard that kids can't digest it it better then fat filled crapisn't it ignore them or if ur that worried ask ur gp but personlly i think its ok

Thunderduck · 20/06/2009 21:02

Sushi is the vinegared rice. Yes sushi with raw fish is the most common kind of sushi but that doesn't mean that sushi can be described as raw fish.

Supermarket sushi is not a good example. It's a poor subsitute for the real thing, though I'll eat it as a last resort, and M&S vegetable sushi is quite nice.
It isn't a bad introduction to sushi though.

Actually right now I'd settle for any sushi, from any supermarket.

Thunderduck · 20/06/2009 21:04

Supermarket sushi usually uses smoked rather than raw salmon.
