...to eat a vast slab of cake before DH gets home and then deny all knowledge of it?

The neighbours downstairs had their DC's first birthday yesterday.

And just now there was a knock on the door and the mum handed me a VAST slab of the LO's birthday cake for me, DH and DS to share. They might be unreasonable gits sometimes, but by god they can make cake (new Mr Kipling slogan, anyone? )

Gorgeous light sponge, real cream, real fruit instead of jam ... it is heaven. I have already had two little tastes, and can see my self chipping away, bit by bit, until it's all gone.

SO should I just go the whole hog and eat it? DS doesn't need cake, DH will say he's trying to lose weight (and then moan once he's scoffed it) and I am STARVING and it's v v v delicious.

OTOH, I'm supposed to be trying to lose weight too and there must be a million calories, it's a bit selfish and I will feel sick (if gratified) afterwards.

WWMumsnetD? The decent thing or the greedy thing...?

eat it. deny all knowledge. if he does find out claim loss of memory and say you have no idea what hes on about

Lucia39 · 16/06/2009 16:53

Depends on how committed you are to losing weight. You could try and justify the calories by cutting down tomorrow! Alternatively, you could share it [and the guilt] with your partner!

ljhooray · 16/06/2009 16:53

Definitely greedy but not sure I could hand on heart say I wouldn't nothing like a well baked sponge. YANBU but you may suffer some temporary guilty side effects!

I regularly buy magnums safe in the knowledge that dh rarely looks in the freezer and can scoff them myself when he's out!

traymca · 16/06/2009 16:53

I agree with pink ginger - eat it all and enjoy!! it might go off otherwise....

pjmama · 16/06/2009 16:54

It has no calories if nobody sees you eating it.

AMumInScotland · 16/06/2009 16:55

Will the neighbours bump into him and ask how the cake was? I'm all for cake-eating, but I'd just so hate to get found out...

LoveBeingAMummy · 16/06/2009 16:55

YABVVVVVU, send it to me and I will get rid of it for you

chimchar · 16/06/2009 16:57

cut off a really small slice for your dh. eat the rest.

tell dh when he comes home that your neighbour popped over a little slice of cake (just big enough for one) for you, and you are so lovely because you cut it in two and shared the little slice with him!

EyeballshasManBoobs · 16/06/2009 16:57

'Oh, by the way DH, Pauline downstairs brought round some of Dwayne's birthday cake for us. I didn't think you'd be that bothered though so I didn't save you any, but I bought you a kitkat instead. Shall I put the kettle on?'

frazzledgirl · 16/06/2009 17:00

Hmm, some interesting ideas here

Especially love pjmama's theory: "It has no calories if nobody sees you eating it."

Goes nicely with my theory about a Snickers bar and apple cancelling each other out if you eat them at the same time...

I think I am going to text DH and TELL him about the cake to remove the temptation to eat it all.

Whether it might be a bit smaller than expected when he gets home is another matter entirely

Or if you drink a diet coke at the same time, that will cancel out all the calories in the cake, even if someone did see you eating it.

frazzledgirl · 16/06/2009 17:01

pjmama, we clearly subscribe to the same school of nutrition!

If it has real fruit in it, it counts as one of your five a day. As a wife and mother, it is your responsibility to take care of your health, so it is clearly your duty to eat all this cake!!

BTW - I love the new Mr Kiplings slogan, frazzled girl!!

WinkyWinkola · 16/06/2009 17:09

Just tell him the tiger came to tea!

I do that a lot.

bleh · 16/06/2009 17:14

If you eat it standing up, then they definitely don't count.

I like chimchar's idea. You end up sounding virtuous.

ljhooray · 17/06/2009 14:49

question is, was it worth it? What's better than cake? Secret illicit sponge cake! Bet it was fantastic!

Stigaloid · 17/06/2009 14:53

No - scoff away!

Pinkjenny · 17/06/2009 14:54

I would definitely eat it. I heart birthday cake, but had horrendous ms during dd's 2nd birthday celebrations and couldn't eat any!

Heated · 17/06/2009 14:56

You'll be doing him the favour by eating it

I felt similarly about a whole strawberry swirl cheesecake
