AMBU to expect Tesco to deliver food thats in date!

my kids have been eating some ski yoghurts that i got delivered from tesco last monday and only today has DS noticed the date on them - its 23 MAY!!

yuk!!! now i know that use by dates are due to be scrapped and i know mistakes happen but these are WEEKS out of date.

ive phoned tesco.com and they are sending me a tenner voucher, and have refunded the cost of the yoghurts but i know that tesco have just been fined heavily for selling food thats out of date - would you accept it? they asked me to dispose of them...(well im not planning on keeping them for prosperity but im guessing that if i kept them i could drop them in it with trading standards...but i dont think i could be chewed tbh!)
would you accept the apology and the tenner?

I wouldn't accept that. I'd go to environmental health. I used to order weekly from Tesco, I no longer do and switched to Ocado over a year ago and have never looked back. Tesco were delivering way too much food which was either on or very close to it's sell by/use by date so I had to throa alot of meat/fish etc out. Ocado's great, it comes up on the screen how long you should expect things to last for and the used by dates are on the reciept with the item list so you can pop it on the door and see what you need to use without having to search. They even bring you a free newspaper. Alot of things are tesco price matched and Waitrose who supply them have just brought out a 'budget' range so my bills are down.

I had out of date chicken from tesco, they told me all they would do is refund it... I have NEVER shopped in tesco since... Out of date chicken could have killed me! Sainsburys delivery is much better than tesco (not tried ocado) they keep things to one side if they are near to dates and you can refuse them without charge but I have never had anything sent that was close to date.

oh and they pick everything the same day they deliver.

I really am impressed with Ocado. I tried sainsbury's but found they would substitute alot, I ordered a single wooden train for ds, it was about a pound but they sent a whole wooden train set instead at £15 . Ocado turn up on time, they are sometimes early but phone first.

I agree sometimes you do get a home shop from tescos with v short dates, I always put a note on the bottom of the order saying freshest dates possible pls. I would be v annoyed if it was out of date. Agreement that they are out of order for sending you out of date yoghurts but I wouldnt take it further if you have already agreed to accepting the tenner as way of apology.

Have a look at www.mysupermarket.co.uk though and compare you basket at all the supermarkts. Everytime I check, Ocado is about £13 more expensive than everywhere else.

Waitrose have introduced a no frills range, it's really cheap. Ocado do alot of buy one get one free etc. Keep away from the cakes though, these are expensive but soo tasty!

I got kippers as a substitute for cocktail sausages once from tescos home delivery when I tried to take them back the assistant told me I had not kept them cold enough in my fridge to return them

Yeah, probably will all depend on where you live. I have never had many substitutions from our Sainsbury's and the ones I've had have been what I would have chosen but you can reject substitutions and choose what things you would mind being substituted when you order (gets picked at big Preston Sainsburys). Give them both a try and see what you think. I'd just never give tesco your business again, which is quite difficult cos they are everywhere but it's really the only thing you can do that'll make a difference.

mysupermarket compares like to for like. You probably could get an Ocado shop down to the price of a Tesco's one if you swaped everything for the Value range but like for like Tesco's is still cheaper.

And I've had no substitutions for weeks!

I have often had to send stuff back because it is going out of date the next day or even on the date it is delivered.

Then I have to go to the shop and buy the stuff again, it drives me mad.

I don't know if they just try to palm the old crap off on you because they think you wont notice or if the pickers are stupid or can not read

I dont think the pickers are stupid or cannot read, if they only have short dates to give you then they dont have a choice. If something you picked in the store was short dated you wouldnt pick it up or change it for something slightly different that has a longer date, however unless they dont have it they cant make this distinction for you. As I said before it is annoying when you get lots like it.

I've seen the pickers at work in our local Tesco. They certainly don't pick stuff as carefully as I would. I prefer to go to the shop and pick my own.

Cant vouch for all of them but I know the ones at ours try to, cos they know they wouldnt like very short dates. So do I, MaryBS.

I have to say I love my delivery bloke to bits, he is helpful and always cheerful, he was here the other week carried in 15 crates of stuff and when I offered him a drink he was seems not many people do offer him a cold drink or use of the loo.

I find it is mostly the cold meats that are about to go out of date, when I go to the shop I tend to go for the packs at the back as they have a longer date, its not rocket science

think ive tried to get ocado before and they dont (or didnt) deliver round here but i might try again.

ive less of a problem with things that are about to go out of date but these yoghurts were weeks out of date when they were delivered and its pissed me off! my dd ate one yesterday, but when ds opened one today he knew it was off so chances are my dd ate one that she shouldnt have and didnt complain!

i think they can shove their voucher where the sun dont shine - ill try and find another delivery service. where i live we only have one tesco - but i know the home delivery comes from a distribution centre in a nearby town. ive had quite a few problems with it lately (including when i dared to buy a large packet of condoms and they were never in the baskets! i had to phone up and get the money back! some packer or driver had a very good night on me!)
