For a man (albeit talented)who kicks a football around.

It's still a little obscene.

mayorquimby · 11/06/2009 23:10

i've also never understood this attitude of "ffs there are people starving etc" did you say the same when the last batman movie came out and made similar amounts of money in it's opening weekend?why is this ire only reserved for sports deals. if any business hires someone and pays them an obsecen amount of money because they believe it will make them more money than they are paying out their doesn't seem to be this moral indignation.
it's not like madrid were sitting there going "right we have 80 million to invest to strengthen our company. we've narrowed it down to ronaldo or giving it all away to the 3rd world"
it's a business like any other.another competitior had an asset they wanted. they agreed a fee that suited all partys involved and then made a business deal.

Tallulah My DH supports Man U, and so was a mite upset to be losing Ronaldo today - he'll get over it though, I am sure. But he is also a huge football nut - played at quite a high level, coached, manager, etc (not for any big teams though). It doesn't matter what team is playing he will always watch a game on the telly. Or tune the radio to 5 Live or whatever when we're in the car. At the end of the English football season he watches the end of the Italian/Spanish leagues.

He's not keen on the Scottish Premier League though! Dunno why

shockers · 11/06/2009 23:28

" Taxed to fuckery"
The young girls at work ( big Man U supporters) who have previously swooned over his every move were discussing this today.... " I hope someone injures him so badly he never plays again" says one... " Yeah" says the other " That way we keep the cash and the f*er doesn't get to play against us" Give me rugby any day!
Sorry to digress

Stigaloid · 12/06/2009 09:15

It is an obscene amount of money for a man who kicks around a sack of air for a living. Heck it is an obscene amount of money for any vocation really.

FairLadyRantALot · 12/06/2009 09:19

YANBU....

but than, I hate football/soccer...well...any ball game really....

they should pay dancers/ gymnasts and the like for competing....and show more of that on TV...not stupid-Ball...

mayorquimby · 12/06/2009 10:18

"they should pay dancers/ gymnasts and the like for competing"

sorry but who's they? they only pay footballers big money when a club deems the risk financially viable (although as has been seen many of them lose this gamble a la leeds), not due to some moral decision that footballers deserve the money and gymnasts don't. it's the most supported game in the world so it means big business to tv companies and the top clubs. it's simply market forces at work. in countries where there is not enough money generated the players do not earn big money, where they do generate money they get paid like in any other business.

Think how many ferrari cars he can buy and crash with his weekly wages (£225,000)!

Shocking amount of money. His head will get EVEN bigger now....

mayorquimby · 12/06/2009 10:37

he could get 2 bugatti veyrons a week and crash them and still have 5 grand a week to play with. in the last year of his contract he'll be getting 550k or there abouts a week (28.5 mill all together i think) so he can really start to have fun then.

Rindercella · 12/06/2009 11:52

As has been pointed out on several of the programmes DH has tuned into over the last 24 hours, Real Madrid have bought Ronaldo for about the same money as Mike Ashley is trying to flog Newcastle Utd for!

Ronaldo is an asset, pure and simple. Real Madrid will make the £80m price tag many times over by selling stuff - shirts, etc., -with his name/image on.

pinkstarfish · 12/06/2009 11:58

alright alright don't shoot me down over it I'm not expecting the football club to post that money in a big brown envelope and post it to Africa FGS. More of a metaphorical observation maybe. Here, have some salt....

FairLadyRantALot · 12/06/2009 14:43

well...what I meant was...it would be nice if those sports would be more encouraged with the bribe of money ...because they are beautyful to watch...unlike watching a bunch of sweaty twats running after one ball....

...really do not like Football, you see...

I know, kinda , why Football pays so well..i.e. apeals to the masses and shite like that....however, I suppose Rugby, which is also a Ball game that appeals to the masses has got better arrangement and limits how much players get payed...
I truely don't think that anyone is worth that amount of money...people are greedy...

however, I suppose, one reason it is well payed is, because being a top player is not going to be a long term thing...however....nowadays ex footballers have plenty other ways open to them to earn dosh once they can't play anymore....like selling your story to a magazine or doing aftershave, etc...adds....

I also think it is really pathetic that forinstance Bruce Forsythe (sp?) is not happy anymore presenting Strictly due to a pay cut....instead of getting somehting like 800K for 13 weeks of work (not even daily work in those 13 weeks) they offered him 400K, or some such thing...I mean...wtf...it's difficult to feel for them...it really is...
