to chuck all the Johnson & Johnson baby skincare I was given when DS was born in the bin?

He has really sensitive skin and I have never used it. I wouldn't use it even if he didn't - baby lotion brings me out in a rash and I wouldn't use anything on him that I couldn't tolerate. I don't feel I can give it away as it's a bit like 'this isn't good enough for my PFB but I'm sure it's fine for yours'. Isn't it? But I feel bad about throwing away a load of unopened containers.

If anyone wants it and can come and collect, do let me know

You could speak to one of the Health Visitors at your local clinic. There could be a local centre for young mothers nearby which would be very grateful for them. I have a lot of DD's things to a similar place close to me.

mum23monkeys · 09/06/2009 20:44

I still have some from ds1's bounty pack thingy. He's nearly 7. The fact that J and J baby lotion is the best waterproof mascara remover around gives me an inkling that it would strip gloss paint off my skirting boards given the chance. I will not let it near my dcs' skin.

ds1 has terrible eczema and none of my dc have ever had any detergent in the bath. ds1 can't even wash his hands with normal soap. They have a bath additive and clean really grubby bits with epaderm (greasy eczema gunky stuff). And they are very clean and gorgeous smelling monkeys.

Noonki · 09/06/2009 20:46

belly2go...don't use talc on babies!!! It gets into their lungs AND dries their skin making them moreprone to eczema.

YANBU - I chucked ours, the thought of encouraging someone spreading all of those chemicals over a baby makes me

plimple · 09/06/2009 20:46

Freecycle or use yourself.

duchesse · 09/06/2009 20:50

Noonki- it's also implicated in ovarian cancer- apparently it can work its way up baby girls' genital tracts...

2rebecca · 09/06/2009 21:17

Johnsons baby lotion is chemically loaded, same with the baby bath. Glad no-one gave me any. No sure why anyone thinks babies need talc either, their skins usually need moisturising (with moisturisers with only a few ingredients and no additives to smell and colour it) not drying out.
I'd do freecycle or charity shop rather than chuck it.

spicemonster · 09/06/2009 21:27

I have put an ad on freecycle in case anyone wants it for cleaning car parts or something

I think J&J is the skincream of the devil. It really stings my skin - I would never use it on a baby.

FairLadyRantALot · 09/06/2009 21:33

lol spice...

tbh, I was shocked today about peoples ignorance about the likes of Babyoil...
although could just about excuse it as it came up in a non-mummy-environment !

2muchinformation · 09/06/2009 21:37

Never used J&J and would not use it. it is full of chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils. I use water mostly, and when I need to clean dd properly i use either Simple, or Nature babycare.

When she was a baby, used water and cotton wool for months and months and felt sad to start using cleaning products (only did when her weaning poo became yucky, and when she learnt to spread scrambled egg through her hair!).

I am sure some freecyclers will want it for engine cleaner!

playftseforme · 09/06/2009 21:41

YANBU it's terrible stuff

ohdearwhatamess · 09/06/2009 21:51

YANBU - horrible stuff

I can't use it without coming out in a horrible rash, so I certainly wasn't going to use it on the dcs. I gave mine away to someone who loves their stuff .

I must be the only person who loves it

JessJess3908 · 09/06/2009 22:14

YANBU. I have a bag full of J&J from my sis (who's DS has broken out in eczema) that I am wondering what to do with. If you have any of the baby oil you can dab a little on newspaper and it will bring your stainless steel cooker hood up lovely

R2G · 09/06/2009 23:47

Hi I would keep the baby lotion.
My son has eczema and has cream to put on prior to getting in the bath, oilatum in the bath, double base and bandage tubes so no I wouldnt use J & J on his skin. I gave away all the bubble bath I got, but another thing he is sensitive to is when he's had a poo (sorry to be graphic) and it's a bit sticky toilet roll on its own, or using thousands of those kandoo type flushable wipes makes his bum sore.
I've found a good slathering of baby lotion on some toilet roll and then wipe it off with toilet roll really does the trick, and it's flushable.

Also if you have a leather sofa same thing wipe off any marks with baby lotion on a toilet roll and it takes away the make and moisturises the leather.

WOW I'm its biggest fan arent I?!

IrritableGrizzly · 10/06/2009 07:21

R2G That's a great tip about using it to wipe pooey bottoms...my ds1 suffers from constipation/soiling and has quite a lot of accidents, and using loads of Kandoo gets most expensive and wasteful, so I'm going to try your baby lotion idea. Thanks!

spicemonster · 10/06/2009 09:16

OOH I have a taker on freecycle! R2G - that's a good tip but I wouldn't use it on my DS as it gives me a rash so chances are (as he seems to be allergic to everything else I am allergic to) it would have the same effect on him. But there's probably something else I can use instead - I really don't want to use Kandoos if I can help it.

I found kitchen roll and warm water good for sticky poos. Kitchen roll holds together better than toilet paper.

stripeypineapple · 10/06/2009 10:17

YANBU.

Baby oil and many other products aimed at babies contain petrolatum, a by-product of the petrol industry, definitely not recommended for babies skin.

As a massage therapist and a baby massage instructor what we generally say for the oil we put on babies and adult skin is if you wouldn't put in your mouth don't put on your skin.
