For one - i haven't got a credit card (by choice - can't spend money i don't have), and even if i did, how secure are 'secure' pages, really?

For two - how can i try shoes on over an ethernet cable? how can i feel the fabric of a scarf (obv so i know if i'm going to find it itchy, not because i'm some sort of Cloth-Snob).

For three - if you end up with damaged or unsuitable goods how much more awkward is it to send them back? (That's a genuine question - i really don't know!)

And finally - when you get grocery shopping online how irritating is it when you end up with a box of eighteen petits filous which go off tomorrow?

Come on - is it really that great?

Yes. Well there are the usual idiotic nonOcado substitutions. Tesco will send, instead of a bottle of lemon juice, for example, a bottle of Lemon Cif.

Ocado on the other hand (who I LOVE and have just signed up for On Demand) will send a box of unwaxed Sicilian Lemons AND a free Lemon Drizzle cake, along with their free copy of the Times and a new muesli you have not heard of.

Agree with Dittany about books ...that is my favorite of all deliveries ever
A box or package of books....if only I could lock the squids up and settle down immediately

ahhhhhh

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 08/06/2009 22:52

Oh I LIKE the sound of Ocado but I just can't afford them

And anyway I can't be scoffing lemon drizzle cakes, arse is getting hefty enough as it is.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 08/06/2009 22:54

Ocado sell Waitrose stuff, there's alot that are tesco price matched, there's alot of offers aswell so it can work out OK.

The cakes are yummy though, these are expensive.

We have no car so lugging stuff on the bus is so much harder than getting it delivered.

Oh online shopping has transformed my life (and my ahem bank balance ) books, food shop, shoes, hard to find make up brands, clothes, baby toys, and lovely lovely Scandinavian baby clothes that you couldn't get anywhere in a shop except unless you live in Notting Hill I imagine.

NetworkNanniesSurrey · 09/06/2009 00:10

Try mysupermarket.com and you will save a load of money. Also, how nice is it to have it delivered to your door and not have to bring it in from the car on a dark rainy night?

If you get stuff you dont like give it back to the driver and they refund you.

If you get stuff that is damaged then contact customer service. They always refund you and sometimes take of the delivery charge.

If you use Hotukdeals.com you can sometimes find money off vouchers and save even more cash. I regularly take at least £10 of my bill just for typing in a code.

Also, no trolly rage!!!

Online shopping rules! I buy all my Christmas pressies online and try to do as much grocery shopping as poss online, too. I used to use Ocado and loved it, but can't really afford it these days. Sainsburys are reasonably good, although you inevitably have more issues with out-of-stock items and short-dated goods when your delivery comes from a local supermarket, as opposed to a single distribution centre. I have had refunds for the asking, and it's great for buying books and records, too. Buying clothes is a bit trickier - I have several dresses that don't look quite like they did in the pictures, and which I might have passed over 'in the flesh' - having said that, they're fine and they fit. I wouldn't buy shoes online, though - just can't be confident they will fit!

hmc · 09/06/2009 00:17

Yes it is really that great. I haven't been shopping since October - thank feck for that (pointless waste of time)

It is if you live in the back of beyond as I do.

flamingobingo · 09/06/2009 06:03

YABU

  1. Use a debit card, I don't have a credit card and never will have one. Secure pages just as secure as using a card in a shop - most require you to enter a second level of information from your bank nowadays too.
  1. I don't buy shoes and clothes online - just food, and things I've researched.
  1. Hardly ever happens, but if it does, so long as you use reputable companies, it's easy
  1. Again, doesn't happen often. Buying groceries online saves us a fortune.

It makes far more sense - you can take your time finding the best offer, and there's more choice. Rather than just get what you can find in the high street. You don't have to carry heavy/multiple things (v. important when you have 4 young children!).

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 09/06/2009 06:45

yabu AND yanbu.

For things like grocery shopping it's great but I have seen a few threads on here where people have gone, for example, to a specialist running shop for advice, and then come home and bought on the internet because it's cheaper. The problem with that is part of the higher price of the specialist running shop is their knowledge, and one day you won't have that knowledge because they will close because not enough people buy from them.
Sorry for the rant, bit of a pet hate of mine.

scaryteacher · 09/06/2009 07:08

I live in Belgium and as clothes here are expensive I buy online from Lands End and Boden who deliver to HM Armed Forces addresses. I'd be lost without Amazon for books, as they are far cheaper than here (VAT on books here), and for dvds and games for the ps3 for ds.

I did all my Christmas shopping online last year and had it delivered to it's recipients in UK and it was fab. I didn't go near a shop or a post office and it made life so much easier.

I've never grocery shopped online, but Tesco was right opposite the school at which I taught in UK, so going round there was no hardship to decompress after a day teaching; plus I like to see what I'm buying in the fruit and veg line. I think one supermarket might do home delivery here, but now I don't work, I have time to go during the day; and to take ds so he realises that food doesn't just reproduce in the fridge and the cupboards.

JenniPenni · 09/06/2009 07:28

Ocado are my lifesaver. I childmind 4 kids and 1 big kid every day (so need lots of fresh food) and this frees up my weekend so much.

I have tried other food delivery services (Tesco and Sainsbury's) in the past and Ocado come out on TOPS. Always on time, pleasant chaps who don't mind taking their shoes off (cream carpets!!!) only one substitution ever, had to refund flowers that looked a tad sad once, the driver did that immediately himself (he can take back and refund anything straught away).

I only buy from one online clothing store - as I know their sizes now.

Online stores take CC or debit card - many take paypal which I have connected directly to my bank account. No extra charges, no fuss.

I really enjoy it. Have to admit I am NOT a keen shopper though - for groceries or clothing/shoes etc. Have never been. So this suits me well.
