Was i being unreasonable or were ALL the supermarket customers unreasonable?

ThePhantomPlopper · 06/06/2009 12:28

I'm Ill, cough, cold, temp, sore throat, aches and pains. I have a cold.

Had to go to the supermarket, didn't want to but I had to. Coughing all the way around (hand over my mouth) and getting glares. I look like the living dead today, no make up and wild hair.

Anyway I get to the checkout and my phone rings, it was DH and because there was a long queue, I answered. He noticed I sounded unwell and I said I was off to the Doctors and jokingly said "reckon it's swine flu haha" That was mistake number 1. The people behind me started tutting and saying I was disgraceful! I was but carried on speaking to DH, when I hung up the couple started again, I told them I was joking and that I just had a cold, the lady behind then piped up with "how do you know it's just a cold, have you been tested? And if you are joking it's not funny, my 14yo nephew had a grommit operation as a child, things like this aren't funny for people like him" Mistake number 2, I snorted at this, I thought she was joking, apparently not.

So all hell breaks loose, 1st couple start demanding that the checkout man washes his hands after serving me and 2nd lady is loudly telling everyone that I'm a rude, inconsiderate woman spreading swine flu to all. I'm and getting angry so I shouted "will you freaks just shut up" and stormed out. (I know THAT was unreasonable but I'm ill).

Has the world gone mad? I can't believe it happened, the whole thing was so ridiculous.

They should catch the panic in a jar, kill and bin it rather than spreading it around.

Selfish fuckers.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 06/06/2009 13:39

You should have started 'oinking' as you walked out

ThePhantomPlopper · 06/06/2009 13:42

LOL I was so angry as I left I walked into the automatic door before it had chance to open. Not exactly the dignified exit I was going for. Oinking might have helped.

if you go on cruise ships there is hand gel everywhere (well at least on P&O)
in every public room and everywhere else too

you are not allowed to eat or even walk through a food area if you havent used the gel on your hands... i mean really, they wont give you a plate in the buffet area or let you enter the restaurants!

we now have this stuff at David Lloyd and i noticed it somewhere else too

Divvy · 06/06/2009 13:43

They shouldnt have been listening to you!

iMissEdith · 06/06/2009 13:48

lol lol lol

I am going to sneeze and snort my way around Tesco this afternoon in the hope of shouting 'will you freaks just shut up' at a bunch of Daily Mail faced loons.

I expect I will draw the biggest crowd in the bacon aisle.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 06/06/2009 13:48

nannyL they have had an awful lot of outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships though so they had to do something...

IMo the hand gel was worth it to get at the delicious food

tallulahbelly · 06/06/2009 13:51

Phantom - Did you leave snot on the door? They'd have decontaminated it straight away

The hand gel thing is indeed mental though thoughtful for passing alcoholics who might have finished their last can of Special Brew.

nannyL · 06/06/2009 13:52

lovelytinofspam

oh yes i know

i think it is a very very good thing

they take it very very seriously!

I agree the food was devine!!!!! and if the hadn gel stops so much as 1 person becoming ill on holiday then its worth it!

what i meant was more "we are surprised to see hand gel around here, yet on cruise ships its everywhere"

ThePhantomPlopper · 06/06/2009 13:56

Oh yes holidaying on a cruise ship is like holidaying in a petri dish of Noro virus. I remember getting it on a cruise to Egypt. Was not pleasant.

I've just phoned my mum and told her about the incident she said "oh yes, you should get tested there is an outbreak here now"! What she means is, there was one person (holidaymaker) diagnosed down here during half term. Not quite an outbreak Mum.

sorry your feeling crap, but LOL you made me smile

Upwind · 06/06/2009 14:09

LOL

At the same, time YABU, I'd be pissed off if I was with you in the queue. Catching whatever it is you have would not be much fun with my newborn. And swine flu really is spreading, with people in a critical condition because of it.

You should have sent your DH out for the wipes while you took it easy.

ThePhantomPlopper · 06/06/2009 14:13

I know. I would have sent DH to get the wipes, but he's away with the Forces.

I wouldn't have gone if he was here, trust me, I feel like poo, but I had no other option.

I'm sure it's not swine flu though, I think I caught a cold from the big, sneezing, friendly American chap I was talking to on the train on Monday.

OMG I had a grommet operation as a child.

MrsMattie · 06/06/2009 14:51

LMAO! 'Will you freaks shut up?!'

Brilliant. YANBU. You are funny!

QOD · 06/06/2009 14:57

we have anti bac gel things everytwhere on the walls at work, never seen anyone but me use them!
yet, we all use the coffee machine, pressing buttons etc, and NO ONE cleans them ever!
(they do the door push plates with anti bac x 2 a day anyway)

courtneylovescox · 06/06/2009 14:59

rofl at this, what does the grommit operation have to do with any of it?

LovelyTinOfSpam · 06/06/2009 15:10

ROFL @ suddenly people with a cold having to be incarcerated in their own homes.

Easier for them just to wear bells, surely

LisaLoveHeart · 06/06/2009 15:16

Actually hun im really worried about you, im a lurker on mumsnet and your post made me join proper. You said you sat next to an American who sneezed. Have you thought about getting tested? Don't want to panic you hun but this could be serious.

mollyroger · 06/06/2009 15:17

lol at this thread. YANBU!

Dh went to gp the other day nad was horrified they have removed all magazines, books etc and replaced them with bottles of handwash. He had a 40 minute wait with nothing to read.
Bit OTT??

NorbertDentressangle · 06/06/2009 15:25

I would have loved to have been in the next check-out queue to you PhantomPlopper.

I would have said indignantly (in between coughs and sniffs obviously) " How inconsiderate of you! I mean, I've already got Bird Flu and Foot and Mouth. Whats Swine Flu on top of all that going to do to me...probably finish me off I expect?!"

Just watch the shop empty

ThePhantomPlopper · 06/06/2009 15:25

Thanks LisaLoveHeart. I'm sure I'm fine though.
