To be amazed that there were any green discs in the Waitrose charity thing for the Cat's Protection League . . .

. . . when the other two charities to choose from were a SCBU and a charity for families of people with Downs Syndrome?

There were about two feet of green disks for the SCBU, about 18" for the other charity and about a foot for the Cats' Protection.

I mean, I love cats, but would ANYONE think they were more important than the other two?

And yeah, I do understand the political argument that the SCBU should be funded well enough not to need to have to raise its own money.

Cats? You know - it's a cat.

YANBU- In our local Waitrose the greyhounds had twice the amount of green buttons that SCOPE had and I was appalled. I mean, I like greyhounds but just think SCOPE is a far worthier cause. People are mad!

I don't think anyone here is but giving money to animals teaches compassion towards them in a practical way. I give to samaritans, and the RSPCA, and we sponsor a cat to get medical treatment. I admit being a bit soft on animals, I hate loads of people but have never hated an animal. Same way I would encourage my 2 to give to other types of charity, especially those connected to abuse.

Lissya · 06/06/2009 13:06

If all people felt the same then cetain charities would get all the discs/donations and other charities would miss out again and again.

Maybe it depends on how much of an animal lover you are, in this case. There are those animal lovers who prefer animals to people, those who put them on the same level and those who can't get why people would choose to support animals over humans.

Some people may judge it in terms of suffering. Animals can suffer terribly, especially physically because they are so vulnerable, having been abused, starved and neglected, with untreated broken bones/tails/teeth kicked out etc at the hands of a violent owner. Helping this cause is as important to them as supporting DS is to another person.

I think any support of a charitable needy cause is a good thing and don't think we should nit-pick too much at the who and why in this instance.

I do feel a bit sorry for the greyhounds as it goes. They are used to make money for people, then as soon as their usefulness has passed they are ditched. Their suffering is a direct result of human greed. So only fair to give them a hand I reckon.

I really don't see the problem, the money is split so all the charities get something. Would people rather waitrose didn't do it if they disagree with the results?

wook · 06/06/2009 14:26

Actually, I feel quite sorry for greyhounds too, and I'm not a hater of animals. But I don't really like the fact that at least three times as many people who shop at the local Waitrose would apparently rather support greyhounds than people with cerebral palsy and their families. I just think it odd.

starkadder · 06/06/2009 15:21

It's probably because you don't see many greyhound charities so it's a rarer opportunity to give them your "vote". (the greyhounds)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 07/06/2009 19:58

Maybe the SCOPE box had just filled up quicker than the greyhound box and had needed to be emptied to make more space, while the greyhound one hadn't filled up yet?

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/06/2009 20:06

Christ is this one still going!

I went into my local Waitrose today and was pleased to see that one of the charities was for one of the most deprived schools in the area. However it had the least discs in it so that's where mine went.

i always pop the disc in the one with least discs... unless it's an animal one... i mean love animals and everything....met dh though the animal rights soc at uni... but how can you care more for animals than people!?

Thunderduck · 07/06/2009 20:58

I can understand why some people would. It doesn't bother me if they do.

Thunderduck · 07/06/2009 20:59

Besides there can be more to it than loving animals more.

In the end though it's no one's business.
