to be surprised that so few British people would consider Germany a good holiday destination?

We've just come back from Bavaria and it was amazing. Lakes, the Alps, beautiful houses, good food, lots of culture, historic sites...

I highly recommend it!

it is lovely isn't it? some absolutely beautiful parts of germany.

wrinklytum · 03/06/2009 22:24

Germany is lovely, the bits I have seen.

Nighbynight · 03/06/2009 22:27

hey, if people know how great it is, there'll be hordes of brits here

you forgot to add, that the Volksfest season has kicked off.

hobbgoblin · 03/06/2009 22:27

Somehow I don't think it's the scenery, rather reservations about Germans.

Thunderduck · 03/06/2009 22:27

I love Germany, particuarly Bavaria. Munich is my favourite city.

I've only been a few times but I fell in love with Munich instantly. It's so clean and the public transport is excellent, if a tad confusing at first.

trixymalixy · 03/06/2009 22:29

I love Germany. My uncle was on the forces there so spent many october holidays there and have been a few times for VW shows with DH.

I was in berlin for a conference last year and am dying to go back as a weekend just wasn't long enough.

DH is going at the end of June. I will be 35 weeks pregnant then so I'm not going .

Thunderduck · 03/06/2009 22:30

I loved the Germans too. I thought they were lovely. I went during Oktoberfest last time and most people were very jovial and kind.

MrsMattie · 03/06/2009 22:30

Only ever been to Berlin (loved it) and Nuremburg (not so keen).

smurfgirl · 03/06/2009 22:32

I think there is a perception that it is not very warm in summer like say Spain or Greece. Also I think the limited coast-line is an issue.

That said I do like Germany and would really like to go back to have a good explore.

But sunshine beachy holidays are important to me and so I chose that over exploring Germany (or any other European country really!!) and I think a lot of other people do too.

MrsMcCluskey · 03/06/2009 22:32

In my teens we spent a fortnight camping in the black forest - it was lovley.
Am keen to take DS's there.
Beautiful scenery, great public transport.
Very clean.

tiredemma · 03/06/2009 22:32

I imagine that the scenery must be breathtaking- we went to Austria at New year and thought it was beutiful- I imagine that some parts of Germany must be the same (Bavaria??)

Thunderduck · 03/06/2009 22:34

Bavaria is stunning.

I hate beach holidays so Germany is perfect for me.

Everyone should go to Oktoberfest at least once. Even if you don't drink. I don't and I went. I loved sitting at tables with people from 10 different countries.

OOh I love Germany!! lived there for 6 months in Heidelberg,
can't wait to get DH and the children there, sadly DH is less than excited

lollipopz · 03/06/2009 22:42

I would never have thought to go to Germany for a holiday until we attended a family wedding in Wiesbaden last weekend then spent the rest of the week exploring the surrounding areas. I must say we were really pleasantly surprised it was absolutely beautiful code has totally made us rethink our holiday destinations to perhaps not go for the obvious places. Must say as well it was surprisingly warm

pointydog · 03/06/2009 22:42

Guilty, m'lud. I smiled in bemused fashion when sister told me she was going to germany on honeymoon. Nicht sehr romantisch.

(As it turns out, she was slightly disappointed with it. )

EyeballshasBackBoobs · 03/06/2009 22:46

I love Germany - the only reason I don't like going is because I was really good at German at school but visits to Germany just show up how much I've forgotten and how crap I am now and it's depressing. We stayed with my German BIL's grandparents two years ago and it was lovely. They invited us to a big family party and it was fab. I'm always secretly jealous of people who have moved there.

AuraofDora · 03/06/2009 22:48

ja!
have been never considered going back as holiday destination, as i have pretty much most places i've been,
mind you, austria is no bag of laughs either much worse time atmos imho

Hassled · 03/06/2009 22:50

I've only ever been to Berlin and have to say I was bowled over by how fantastic a city it is - so much to do and see, and lovely people. I'd been warned that Berliners were pretty uunfriendly - but they love children, and we had a great time.

pointydog · 03/06/2009 22:50

I will be going to austria sometime fairly soon because I have a friend who lives there. Otherwise, it wouldn't be high on my holiday list.

scottishmummy · 03/06/2009 22:51

germany is stunning
berlin
bavaria
rhine valley
love it

EyeballshasBackBoobs · 03/06/2009 22:53

We had a wonderful holiday in Salzburg (I know it's in Austria!) around Christmas a few years back. Aaaaaahhhh. We were really disappointed there was no snow, which got back to an acquaintance of my dad who arranged a private guide to drive us to a ski resort so that we could play in the snow. T'was gorgeous.

pointydog · 03/06/2009 22:55

I think austria would be triffic if you skied. But I don't.

EyeballshasBackBoobs · 03/06/2009 22:56

Neither do I! I was wearing Birkenstocks at the time

tiredemma · 03/06/2009 22:56

I loved Austria.

pointydog · 03/06/2009 22:57
