To think the new lady shouldn't be made to make brews when she doesn't drink them?

We have a new lady in our office who never drinks anything hot. Everyone else in the office does, and whenever they're making a brew, they ask everyone else if they want one. Now because new lady doesn't drink anything other than cold juice/water, she never offers to make anyone a brew which I think is totally justified, but the others are rolling their eyes a lot at this and saying that she isn't pulling her weight where making brews is concered. I mean WTF!!! I could seriously hurt these bitches and i'm not even violent!

Gosh how much time must be wasted in offices by every member of staff being expected to get up and make a hot brew for themselves and everybody else...

Yanbu lola.

Paolosgirl · 03/06/2009 16:28

Why don't you all just make your own drinks when you want one? Do people still have designated tea breaks?

Morloth · 03/06/2009 16:31

It's OK PuppyMonkey I wear my tag of Mad Australian quite proudly.

oldraver · 03/06/2009 16:31

As one of the juniors in a florist I nearly always made the tea but drunk hot lemon or water. My boss decided one day to have a tea kitty as we had run out of stuff and obviously she was the only one that replaced stuff

She expected me to put money in and didnt like it when I refused on the grounds I didnt drink the tea/coffee or use the milk/sugar

southeastastra · 03/06/2009 16:35

i hate making tea for everyone but will do it.

pees me off though as years ago the office junior (me) did it. no we don't seem to have juniors anymore.

Tamarto · 03/06/2009 16:35

YANBU

I am a non tea/coffee drinker and detest being whinged at asked to make tea, because it's my turn

If they got me drinks while they were off making the tea i wouldn't mind but they don't so why should i?

oldraver - I too have been asked to contribute to them before, apparently not using the stuff isn't a good enough reason to not put money in. Double

Apparently i make quite nice tea, i wouldn't know myself.

FairLadyRantALot · 03/06/2009 16:51

YANBU...

I mean, I suppose it would be different if, when ever people make a brew they would offer to get her water..but as they don't...than, why should she offer make others drinks...

sounds a horrible work environment...

TheProvincialLady · 03/06/2009 17:01

Where is Xenia when you want to make the point that the world of work is NOT uniformly fulfilling for all women?

I don't drink hot drinks and unless someone is willing to go to the shops and buy me a can - a CAN mind, not a bottle - then they could die of thirst before I would make them a cup of tea at work because it was 'my turn'.

Offices can be the most petty and hellish places on earth.

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/06/2009 17:05

I suppose it depends where you work. I have worked in places where we all used to get the tea in a round robin, I currently work in a place where you get your own tea and nobody would ever dream of making someone else a cuppa.

I have never had any hassle or tea-induced bitchery, luckily.

Oh what a boring post

southeastastra · 03/06/2009 17:11

i avoid making tea now so i don't have to ask everyone , i'm such a cow.

i think people should really be responsible for their own hot drink making these days.

Thunderduck · 03/06/2009 17:14

YANBU.

bradsmissus · 03/06/2009 17:17

Tea making poitics in my office is like a parliamentary debate!

They spend more time whining about it than they do working. Some people should not be allowed in an office! YANBU.

futurity · 03/06/2009 17:21

lol PuppyMonkey ....I do not drink tea or coffee because they taste VILE! I have tried..honest I have..to fit in with the whole tea/coffee drinking thing but everytime I have tasted it I just can't understand the fascination!

YANBU!!!
I only drink water... and totally refuse to make drinks for anyone else unless they want water too.
Ive had quite a few people make comments about it in the past. But im not doing it. Ive also been asked to contribute to the tea/coffee fund before... LOL.

scottishmummy · 03/06/2009 20:17

for some people the tea & biscuit debacle is so emotive and divisive

once worked with a real clenchie who maintained "a wall of shame" (her words) about late payment and put it up on wall. used to send it on email an excel spreadsheet.

payments received
Late etc
nominate a wall of shame defaulter

she expected a £5 a month,waaaaaay to much.i brought in my own,kept in my desk.much more economical

when i left she presented with a bill for unpaid tea chitty

needless i didn't pay

if you don't drink tea you shouldn't have do the teas, same as they shouldn't have to trot to water cooler etc for water drinkers

YanknCock · 03/06/2009 20:21

YANBU.

Same as Morloth, I thought this was some weird English custom. In my most recent office I politely abstained from contributing to the tea/coffee/milk kitty because I NEVER have any of it. I bring in my own diet pop and keep it under the desk (nowhere near to buy it, cheaper to get it in bulk). Always decline drinks politely when offered, and do not offer to make others' drinks myself because it would never occur to me that it was expected from a non-hot-drinks-person! Wonder if they are all bitching about it behind my back now!

Saying that, when I worked in London and would pop out, I always asked people around me if they wanted anything while I was out. Same with current office, but since nothing is in walking distance, I go out a lot less.
