DD (2.2) went to nursery on Friday morning, I picked her up at lunch time and she'd been plastered in sun cream as they'd been playing outside. I was fine with this and happy that they'd been safe about dd playing in the sun.

I picked her up at 5 today and because the room was dark compared to the bright sun I'd just walked in from, I didn't the red on her nose and cheeks. The new girl who started in the room today gave me feedback saying that I needed to provide sun cream and a sun hat (when dd had a sun hat with her today). When we got home I could see she has a red nose and rosy cheeks. She's drunk 2 cups of water and refused her favourite dinner of pasta. She is now having some ice cream as she's quite hot.

DD is my first child and I'm not used to having a child out in the sun. DD has quite olive skin, same as mine and I rarely burn. I don't know whether to complain to the nursery or if I'm being a bit precious.

"...and why should other parents subsidise the ones who forget?"

Sorry, what's out of context about that? I get the bit about allergies, no problem with that. And I get that you're a childminder and you have procedures in place. Fine. But tbh, I wouldn't care if dd's nursery used her suncream on every child in the place, as long as they were all, including dd, protected from the sun. Seems a bit petty to object.

And OP, YANBU unreasonable at all if they didn't put cream on her. It's a basic level of care which you have a right to expect from the nursery. DD is very very fair and it'll be her first day in nursery tomorrow in hot weather so I'll be watching closely

pinkjenny - they are brilliant, you do only apply once aday (if it's a short day...but I always do it again if they are out first thing, or on areas that are washed a lot such as faces etc)

they are pricely but well worth it as you use so much less and don't have the fights!

I have only ever had one of mine burn at nursery and that was when the poor montessori teacher missed a bit of ds1's neck. I wasn't cross with her as I knew it was something I could easily have done myself and I only had ds1 and ds2 at the time, she had lots of children in her care!

We are supposed to provide suncream and hats but if we forget, the nursery put some of their own cream on. And surely if a child is allergic to cream, the parents should have informed the nursery of that fact? If you have been left in charge of a child, you have to employ common sense and to me, that means not letting the child burn. And I don't think putting them in the shade will necessarily guarantee not burning, especially if the child wants to play with his/her friends.

Confuzzeled, sounds like your dd was given the fish pie but obviously had the sense herself not to eat the fish! I would have a word with the manager over that.

I've been helping out at a pre-school today and lots of the parents had remembered to bring along sun hats but not many had sun-cream.
We have given out notes to the parents for them to provide us with suncream and/or put suncream on their child first thing when they drop off.
Our pre-school children were out for most of the session but had shady areas to play in and they had full access to the indoors and water.
But i tell you, it is hard work trying to get children to keep their hats on! And at the end of the day it was 'hunt the hat'.
So unless the OP's child was very sunburnt then red nose and cheeks is normal as the sun can still bounce off surfaces.

Ripeberry, I can imagine! Ds3 would NOT wear a hat for love nor money and he has such blonde hair, I don't even feel he gets any protection from that! Cue muggins here rubbing sunblock into his hair parting!

I dropped dd off this morning and spoke to the manager, she said a few kids had rosie noses and they had put on sun cream just not enough obviously. They were very appologetic.

The mix up with food was the new girl getting my dd mixed up with another girl. Apparently my dd did not have the fish.

We have to apply suncream before our kids go into school - we use Bergaderm once a day mousse. It is great stuff - non sticky and easy to apply.

Lasts 6 hours - even with swimming etc. Can usually only find it online - Waitrose used to sell it but no more
