...to be completely outraged at how much a greetings card just cost me?!

flipping heck - go on guess

was a large card, not massive, a bit bigger than A5 maybe, with a nice bit of 'paperwork' on the front

but nothing 'amazing'

My dad has been hospitalised and bedridden for months, and was a bit upset on the phone yesterday because he cant get out to buy my stepmum an anniversary card. He's too embarrased to ask someone to wheel him down to the shop bless him (and my stepmum is there for the whole of the daytime every day anyway) so I said I'd get one and send it to him (I live 3hrs away)

I had an hour this morning to go to the shops, and I spent it trawling around all the card shops in town + sainsburys/boots etc and could NOT find a really nice card that wasnt cringey/overthetop/relevant to the situation.

I finally found one in WHSmith which was almost perfect - making references to how much she takes care of him and wotnot - so just grabbed it and took it to the till.

Have you guessed how much yet?

£6.20

For a card!!!

I nearly swore ( I think I came out with 'flipping heck' lol). To be fair the nice lady at the till asked if I wanted to go back and change it, but having seen what was available in the rest of town I thought b*gger it I'm getting it.

There were no bells and whistles on it - just a card with a lovely appropriate verse and a bit of adornment on the front.

The mark up must be mahoosive!

I realise this is a large rant for a small issue

but

bl**dy hell - thats nappies for a week!

No I agree totally its disgraceful. No card company can justify £6.20 at all.
Christmas is the worst with my lot because of the "To Mum & Dad", "To my Sister and BIL", "To my Nephew", "To my Nan" etc., etc., nonsense - by the time I'd done last year it was nigh on £50 and I could've wept. That's 3 bottle of Drambuie and that would've given us all a great deal more pleasure than ruddy cards to chuck in the bin!!

FairLadyRantALot · 01/06/2009 16:53

indeed....that is a lot of money....we only buy cards in the card warehouse....and you can get lovely cards there, big ones, too...for a fraction of that price...otherwise I would never be able to afford a big card for anyone...

saying that, I hope your Dad will love it, and then it will have been worth it!

atworknotworking · 01/06/2009 17:07

by the time i pay for the card and wrapping etc it costs more than the pressy, but £6.20 is OUTRAGEOUS and lots more

Anyone tried moonpig?

mrsrawlinson · 01/06/2009 17:10

Couldn't agree more, JetLi. We have a 'Bah humbug' arrangement with my family at Christmas. I mean, what's the point of sending DH a card that says Happy Christmas? I see him every bloody day!

gagamama · 01/06/2009 17:13

That is insane! I second the recommendation for The Works, they do lovely cards for under a pound. Also, Paperchase have a range of slightly more expensive but really beautiful cards (about £1.50 - and they tell you what size stamp you'll need which is a nice touch!)

My local library and garden centre also do a nice range of reasonably-priced cards. It's the specific occassions which are tricky though - sometimes it seems a bit impersonal to send a generic greetings card, even though it really shouldn't if you've written something personal inside!

lynniep · 01/06/2009 17:26

Have used moonpig in the past when they've done special offers. Good service. Also used photobox when they've done special offers too (i.e. when they've done say 5 personalised cards for a fiver and I've been able to plan ahead for peoples birthdays)

Our garden centre has good cards too, can be expensive (not as expensive as £6.20!), but they have a good range - unfortunately I had to choose between there or the town centre in the time and I had, and chose the town centre for a couple of reasons. ie. I also needed kitchen roll and petrol!!

It's awful what they charge for cards I am in the Cards for All Occasions club and get 6 a month for £8. They should do family cards, but it works well with the others.

PM73 · 01/06/2009 20:03

Its bloody disgraceful what they charge for a piece of card!!

What also gets my back up is cards that say 'Happy fathers day Grandad' or 'Happy Mothers Day nana' i mean wtf,why would my ds want to wish my dad happy fathers day for,i mean he isnt his dad is he?

Just more money making out of us.

I get ds to make our cards now, keeps him quiet for an hr & saves us loads.

You are DNBU!!

Kimi · 01/06/2009 20:12

Card mark up are massive, a Hallmark card that cost you £1.99 will cost the shop 50p.

Just take pleasure from knowing you did a good and kind thing.

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 01/06/2009 20:22

Have you got a Phoenix Trader near you? Cards are £1.20 each, nice designs and they add new ones regularly.

Phoenix

kslatts · 01/06/2009 20:40

£6.20 is outrageous, I tend to go to card factory and stock up.

lizzyboo · 01/06/2009 20:57

We do cards for the adult family members at xmas, sometimes think it would cost less to get them all a pressie. I hate card shops rip off, they only go in the bin anyway

snorkle · 01/06/2009 21:08

£6.20 is ridiculous. I bought two boxes of 10 nice quality cards yesterday at the market for £1 (each box, not each card!) - nice pictures, simple messages on the front and blank inside and not at all cheap looking. With mine at 10p per card yours was 6200% more expensive (and there were two in the 'mixed occasions' box that would have been quite OK for you, though maybe not quite as appropriate as the £6.20 one as no references to care & wotnot).

chegirl · 01/06/2009 21:23

I LOVE moonpig. I have had great service and the cards are cheap. Not as cheap as card warehouse but much cheaper than Clintons (I have a bit of thing about them but thats another AIBU altogether)

Kids especially love getting moonpig cards.

There is some old tat on there but some genuinely nice stuff too.

6.20 for a CARD

Oh my God that is bear jokes though. Cha!

(outrage East London Styleeee)

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 01/06/2009 21:34

Seriously? £6.20. For. A. Card?

£6.20 for a card?

No YANBU

Jools74 · 27/08/2009 20:11

I used to get Cards For All Occassions too, but I found I ended up with lots of cards I couldn't use as they were too specific, so I switched to Phoenix. I love their cards so much that I became a trader!

MmeLindt · 27/08/2009 20:16

Outrageous!

Unglaublich! (I am even ranting in German for you)

It is all very sneaky. There are no prices on the cards, just a funny wee code. I never think to look for the code price list that is always hidden in the corner somewhere and don't notice till I get to the cash desk.

MmeLindt · 27/08/2009 20:19

Did someone mention Fathers Day? When is that then?

IUsedToBePeachy · 27/08/2009 20:32

Blimey Jenni you must be more restrained than me, I used to make them to, sell them occasionally ahve ahd frmaed etc- I spent over a thousand over 6 years on craft supplies.

Now, we could afford it at the time, it was a really great hobby but-

decided in the end that buying was far less tempting for me

IUsedToBePeachy · 27/08/2009 20:33

(and yes i'm with Che, I now much prefer Moonpig. Still personal but affordable)

LongtimeinBrussels · 27/08/2009 20:52

My mum and dad make beautiful hand-made cards for only £2.50 (keep telling them to up the price but they won't). Shame you don't live in Portsmouth lynniep!

Mumcentreplus · 27/08/2009 21:18

I get mine from M&S v reasonable

I have made my own for as long as I can remember. I don't really know how much I would be expected to pay in a shop anymore. I know that when it comes to my birthday or valentines day my OH gets very stroppy about how much the cards have cost him because obviously I don't make them for him to send to me. I'm sure he would think it was a great idea if I offered to do that for him though. (tight ass)

diddl · 29/03/2010 14:12

That´s extortionate-will it at least deliver itself?
