to expect the postman to knock on the door...

... and hand my parcels to me directly, instead of just popping them in the pram outside? Is under cover so that's okay.

I am poorly at the mo, so am home and saw this shadow by the door... and it was him.. like a ship in the night! No knock or buzz.

Ah well. At least I have a DVD to watch now

He might have decided not to knock in case he disturbed a sleeping baby?

JenniPenni · 27/05/2009 12:18

hehe it's never stopped them before!! But maybe this postie is different They ring the buzzer loud and hard usually.

It depends upon whether your child was in the pram at the time!

Longtalljosie · 27/05/2009 12:54

Better than sticking a "sorry we missed you" card through the door without even knocking, as has happened to me once or twice...

PremenstrualChickens · 27/05/2009 12:59

Longtalljosie - Me too

Babieseverywhere · 27/05/2009 13:05

Longtalljosie, I caught my postman doing this. I called him back to my door, demanded my package. Turns out he just brought out a pre-written 'sorry we missed you' card and didn't have my package, as "everyone is out during the day"

I told him he would have to bring me my package as I can't drive at the moment and I was in when he tried to deliver...he brought it back an hour later.

Longtalljosie · 27/05/2009 13:35

Oh Babieseverywhere - that makes me !

I've never caught them in the act, but once paid guaranteed next day delivery for something my parents needed - dad was ironing and heard the letterbox go - but finished what he was doing before seeing what it was. When I rang up (spitting tacks) they said there was no guarantee(!) they could get back that day. In the end they got it the day after - but they hadn't even been able to guarantee that!

My postman is really good. If I'm out he puts any parcels in the paper bin and writes on one of the letters through the door that he has done so. He's a nice chap.
It was his day off yesterday and we had a post lady. She put a letter for next door through my letter box

Dillydaydreamer · 27/05/2009 14:03

My postie is great and has even been known to deliver to me at a friends address when I am out but visiting her (regular occurence LOL) or he opens the door and puts it in the house as I am fortunate to live in a neighbourhood where it is safe to leave the front door unlocked still. He usually shouts in parcel to which I shout thanks won't be a minute (usually changing a yukky nappy etc )

heartmoonshadow · 28/05/2009 09:50

I know what the original poster means. Our postie is really good and he does knock but the parcel delivery guy never bothers. Even today he has just got out of the van ran up the drive and by the time I got to the door (waddling because I am 33 weeks pregnant) he had gone. BTW we live in a bungalow so not exactly far to front door from here!

Anyway he has left the cot mattress - that I bought and paid 12.00 for delivery - under the gate - he must have slung it with some force as it has landed over 6 ft from gates.

Still this is better than last week when he shoved a small parcel through the window of the front bedroom knocking over a money box and my mums ashes, thankfully neither smashed. All it means is now I can't even leave the front windows open.

We have had a word with the post office but nothing has come of it - if I catch hold of him I am going to give him a piece of my mind. I appreciate he is busy but he is paid to give a service and he just can't be bothered. After all is it not obvious when all windows open, car on drive and radio on in house that there is a good possibility that someone is in.

Sorry for ranting I am going to blame it on hormones

goldrock · 28/05/2009 10:49

We have a lovely postie - if I have any large items he just opens the front door and puts them on the mat, I guess he doesn't like to disturb people and if I see him on the way to school he'll let me know if he has something that needs to be signed for to check I'll be in later (we don't get our delivery until about lunchtime)

Babieseverywhere · 28/05/2009 13:07

In the past when I have been slow walking (on crutches, after operation & CS) I have written a note on an A4 paper and left it hanging from the letterbox slit on the outside.

"I am in. Please wait 5 minutes after ringing doorbell as ."

Seems to help a bit, maybe worth a try

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 28/05/2009 13:13

The postie at my old house was brilliant, would see me down the shops and say he had parcel/recorded delivery would I be in?
He would sign for things for me if I wasn't back in time put small parcels through the cat flap or leave with a neighbour that was always in and loved taing in parcels.
Current postie is a weirdo bit strange things keep happening with our post we always get it just sometimes in 3 lots over the morning.

I love threads like this DP is a postie and I enjoy reading them out to him
