How quickly did they send him home? I've had seizures and when I've ended up in A&E, was usually there until I'd come round and was fully in charge of myself again. Sometimes an hour or so? (Dh was always with me so it wasn't as if they were sending me home alone.)

ilovesprouts · 26/05/2009 19:56

last night an hour this morning 4 hours the last time he had one he was in icu for his breathing

OP posts:
edam · 26/05/2009 19:59

OK, so this time he didn't need any help with his breathing (as in serious help of the kind only available in ICU)?

Bad news he's had a fit last night and one this morning. Is he on any medicine? Are they reviewing the dose?

edam · 26/05/2009 20:00

(Sorry, that could have been better phrased, meant to say 'bad luck'!)

I'm never kept in if I get taken to A&E. I just come home (obviously providing there's someone to take me home) and sleep it off.

Verity79 · 26/05/2009 20:12

I have epilepsy and hate being in hospital after having a seizure. Nothing like bright lights, loud noise and stupid drs who seem to think each seizure is not actually epilepsy and want to find out if it's your heart/drugs/god knows what to help you sleep it off. Sometimes the ambulance won't even take me (yay), as they don't see the point in taking a know epileptic to hospital after a seizure.

I'm sorry your DH has had two seizures in a row. I hope he sleeps off the effects soon.

flowerybeanbag · 26/05/2009 20:15

I have epilepsy and have been taken to hospital a couple of times. Both times I was allowed home once they'd made sure I was in one piece and someone had come to fetch me.

ilovesprouts · 26/05/2009 22:10

they last about 5-10 mins the worst one lasterd 30 mins that was when he went into icu they have increased his meds but hes just very tierd im dreading tonight fingers crossed the first time i saw him have a fit its was horrible and i just went to bits

he takes epilim 800mg twice daily makes him very drowsy

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 26/05/2009 22:36

Has he had his meds reviewed recently ilovesprouts? 1600mg of epilim a day is a high dose. I used to be on 1200mg of epilim a day and I changed to a different medication a couple of years ago. It's much better for me, less side effects and I need a much lower dose as well.

Obviously I am not a doctor and know nothing about his case but if he's on such a high dose and it's making him drowsy it might be worth pushing to have other options explored?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/05/2009 22:43

The docs don't generally send DH to hospital unless it is a major fit, or there are are complications

And when they do it's only untill he comes around fully and then they send him home to rest.

There is nothing they can do for him if he does have a seizure other than wait it out, so there is no point keeping him there and taking up the bed/resources.

He also takes epilim, but only 500mg twice a day. It doesn't make him drowsy, but he often complains of 'feeling funny' which I foind highly annoying as his feeling funny usually follows me sayig this.."I am taking the dog out now, while I am gone could you clear the childrens dinner things and wash up?"

ilovesprouts · 26/05/2009 22:55

hes got an appointment on thurs at our local hospital but thanks for all your replies

OP posts:
edam · 26/05/2009 23:18

do ask the consultant (hopefully a consultant or at least a senior registrar) about the medicine - maybe dh would benefit from a different drug? I think they just stick people on Epilim and forget there are alternatives.

Riven- I was just going to say the same.
I don't think he should be driving at all

slightlycrumpled · 27/05/2009 08:03

My dad was diagnosed with epilepsy last year and had to be seizure free for one year before getting his license back, which he now has.

It is very scary Ilovesprouts, my mum was unable to sleep properly for months waiting for it to happen again. I think this is partly due to the fact that he went straight into status epilepticus from never having a seizure before and ended up on a life support machine. Thankfully he has never had another one. Hope the appointment goes well for him and that they sort out his meds.

ilovesprouts · 27/05/2009 08:52

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 27/05/2009 10:22

Glad you had a reasonable night.

I am on lamotrigine at the moment - I find it much better than the epilim. Was it no good for your DH? I assume not if he was taken off it.

ilovesprouts · 27/05/2009 11:35

the lamotrigine was not working for him hes also had phenytoin, carbazepine, keppra sorry if spelt wrong

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 27/05/2009 22:05

Yes he is currently allowed to drive, but since almost killing himself, has decided never to drive again.

The law states that if you have been fit free for 12 months you are fit to drive.

DH has fits roughly once a year. At the time he was driving I believe he had only had one fit, and that was 18 months previous.
