to think that some children at dsd's school should not be allowed in until they are clear of ringworm? (genuinely asking)

DSD's school sent home a letter on tuesday this week stating that three children had contracted ringworm and to keep a look out but that if your child did contract it not to keep them off school.
The next day a further 8 children were confirmed with ringworm.
Yesterday another 12 were confirmed. This info has come from the school.

Surely if the outbreak in her school is spreading this quickly then the school should be advising that anyone confirmed with it should be kept at home to stop the spread?

I am feeling quite cross that it's likely that dsd will contract it (quite a fe of the children affected are in her class and they have swimming today as well), as we have dsd all school holidays that means that she won't be able to attend holiday clubs. (both of us work full time and have only started our new jobs in the last couple of weeks following redundancy). Obviously she can't go to our normal childminder either so that means we will have difficulty with work over the next week.
Also, if she does get it then it's likely that dd will also get it.......
And of course dsd will be bloody uncomfortable as well.

Arrrrrrgh.

Oh how horrid - school is being utterly stupid. I'd keep her off totally until they change their policy!! It';s nearly half temr anyway.

It's so easy to spread. Just by contact I think.
And it takes ages to go away.

Keep an eye on her and if you see any unusual little patches of redness, start with fucidin or daktarin (from chemists) right away, keep applying it for a week after it's disappeared - might nip it in the bud. I did this when my boyfriend had it and the red mark never developed, though it took a few days to vanish.

also don't share towels, and don't send her swimming. Unless too late for today.

HTH x

thanks for the advice flight.

I think i am worried because dd has severe psoraisis anyway, if she got this on top she would find that really upsetting (v sensitive at the mo). And i realise that is ridiculously PFB by the way.

I have phoned the school and said she is not to go swimming today, they were very but have stuck to my guns. They are still saying that they won't send children home even though another 4 have confirmed today.....
Surely this is getting a bit much now?

Oh lovely. This type of thing really pisses me off actually, and it's not just the school, why the hell are parents sending their children in to share their infection? When I discovered nits one morning I kept them off to sort their hair out!

gladbag · 22/05/2009 11:24

The general advice for Primary Schools on ringworm is to keep the child off school until treatment has started (see here) so the as long as the children have 'commenced treatment' there isn't a lot the school can do. Are they checking?

InternationalFlight · 22/05/2009 11:37

I don't think you're being PFB at all, especially if she already has psoriasis...what are they thinkign?

In fact I would consider this more than sufficient reason to keep her off until they confirm there are No New Cases.

Nits is dealt with here by keeping children off until treated - but ringworm takes AGES to treat, and you have to keep treating it a week after it's visibly gone, as it can come back.

InternationalFlight · 22/05/2009 11:38

...Gladbag, I can see why they might feel compelled to follow those guidelines however it is obviously not working very well!

idranktheteaatwork · 22/05/2009 13:13

Hi,

no they are not checking, this morning i was told not to be concerned as it is half term next week.
Oh jolly good, we'll all spend half term treating ringworm and avoiding all the childrens mates then shall we?

One of the mums has said that she is not treating her son as she can't get to the chemist until Saturday.
Is really fucking me off now.
