to be annoyed at this?

We attended BIL's wedding last week, we had a lovely time and it was a fab day, but I was a little annoyed at my name being spelt wrong, once on the seating place, and a second different-but-still-wrong spelling of it on my place card.

I know it's not a mahoosive issue in the grand scheme, etc, etc. DP thinks I'm being a bit Victorian, but then I'm quite a stickler for manners (not that I'll be bringing it up with them or anything, I'm not that annoyed, I just feel it's a bit rude).

AIBU?

Sorry, should have clarified, it was my surname, which is v unusual and not an English name

I would have corrected it in red pen

YABU.

You have no idea what is going on in other peoples lives. Actually in this case you do. They are preparing for a wedding and presumably honeymoon, massive amount of pre work and organisation required.

Perhaps the hotel printed up the cards or they got someone else to do it - I know I did at our wedding, my cousin was keen to get involved so I asked her to write the place names as she has lovely handwriting.

Unless you have any specific previous issues with these relatives then you are being a bit precious.

Jux · 22/05/2009 15:09

People have been spelling my name wrong or saying it wrong since I was 6. I just got used to it. Now I am surprised and delighted if people get it right.

MadreInglese · 22/05/2009 15:19

ok maybe I need to lower my expectations a little, I always make sure I take great care getting the correct spelling of people's names, especially if it's something unusual, but maybe that's just me

Agree it would be very precious of me to be moaning about it to the couple or making a big issue out of it, which I'm not doing, I'm just slightly quietly privately (away from family) a little bit annoyed about it and having a grumble on here

Perhaps AIBU was the wrong section, should have known I get a personality bashing here

(and hercules, WTF?!)

I dont think YABU. Its careless but I don't think the population at large is big on accuracy...so many people are crap at this - it really is amazing. You would think that for an occasion such as a wedding, someone may have made an extra special effort to ensure spellings are just so...but clearly not! Peasants!

marymungoandmidge · 22/05/2009 15:41

Oh take no notice MI...as I said - to some its sooo not a big issue, but it drives me mad too!!
I particularly hate it when a friend of mine insists on spelling Nicky like this 'Nickiy'....stupid or WHAT? I've known he for years and still she can't quite get her head around it....(she's not even thick either!!!!)

mumeeee · 22/05/2009 15:49

YABU. DD1 had difficulty finding out how to spell some peoples nanes when she was doing the seating plan and name cards. I think she did end up getting one persons wrong but noone minded.

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2009 15:56

Am I the only one who needs to know what the name is and how badly it was mis-spelled in order to formulate an opinion on this?

My name always gets spelled wrong. On driving licence, university grant cheques (remember them), you name it. But it's a complicated name. If your name is Jack and they spelled it Jak, then yes you need to shoot them.

MadreInglese · 22/05/2009 17:40

there would be no difficulty finding out, asking DP, asking me, asking MIL, checking the phone book, checking facebook, etc

Imagine my surname is Pavarotti (pretty much spelt-as-it-sounds, as mine name is), the two versions would be like Povayottray and Prevovottie, ie not really anywhere near

I realise now that not everyone would be irritated with this, that's fine, each to their own

MI, I think it's just one of those things - I was saddled with 2 names that are easy to mis-spell - to the extent that when I enrolled at university, and I had to correct the woman as to the spelling of my name, she actually asked me if I was sure!

I would have been a bit peeved too; because I also made sure that everyone's name was spelt correctly at my wedding - but then spelling correctly is very important to me.

plimple · 22/05/2009 23:57

If it was spelt twice in 2 different ways wrongly I think you must just have a hard name.

steviesgirl · 23/05/2009 00:01

YABU. Everyone can make mistakes, it wasn't deliberate. There are far worse things to get peeved about in life!

I've been actually called verbally a (in my opinion) totally different name to my own, but for some reason some people will often call me it! Yes it's a tad irritating but I roll my eyes and move on.

katiestar · 23/05/2009 09:53

My surname is 'wood' and SO many people call me 'Woods' ,which I think is odd because 'wood ' is far more common than 'woods'.have to say it doesn't really bother me though.
