to think that an HSM inspired strapless prom dress is inappropriate for a 10 yr old?

10 yr olds want to look like Sharpay and Gabriella but aren't strapless prom style dresses totally inappropriate for a 10 yr old for the school disco? After all they are teenagers in the film so a lot older.

What would be a suitable and more appropriate alternative? Something that mother and daughter would be happy with? Or am very far behind the times?

Any ideas gratefully received!

Have you got a link to the dress? I haven't seen it. A lot of 10 year olds where I live seem to be going for a layering of multiple tops over leggings look at the moment.

Mamazon · 20/05/2009 09:17

Asda have a load of HSM stuff. with sequins and ruffles. a little more age appropriate i think.

alexandre · 20/05/2009 09:20

MillyR - there isn't a specific one, it's what I have been asked for. I don't even want to start looking! Tops over leggings sounds much more my kind of thing!

Mamazon - she doesn't want anything with HSM on it (too old for that) - just wants to look like the characters from the film ie. dress very grown up.

this?

Paolosgirl · 20/05/2009 09:22

Strapless is not a good look for a 10 year old in my book, but I wonder if you could compromise by buying the strapless one and then fixing some ribbon or something to it from a haberdashers to make straps or a halterneck?

Or does that make me sound like the old fogey rubbish why do you always spoil my fun mother that I am??!

PenelopePitstops · 20/05/2009 09:22

try the tammy range at bhs?

misdee · 20/05/2009 09:23

itys like the one she wears here

MillyR · 20/05/2009 09:25

Monsoon have got some very grown up but still demure party dresses in, but at £50 they are very expensive for a disco! I think a dress with straps but maybe an empire line and long skirt would be a prom type look.

BobtheWoodmouse · 20/05/2009 09:27

I think if the dress fits well, the style of a prom dress is 'pretty' rather than 'tarty' so it might not be so bad - particularly if you get one in a nice material and not too strident a pattern, colour or shine!

My just 14 year old DD has worn them for parties and she looked lovely - with flats and opaque tights or leggings. She has also worn them with a top underneath - a t-shirt, long sleeves or thin cotton poloneck - sounds weird but it works and with the right prom dress is a good look for a daytime party - and in the winter when it's cold

I think it's how the dress is worn that can make the difference - makeup, shoes etc, stick to flat metallic sandals or ballets and tinted lip balm (good luck with that!)

Be thankful she doesn't want to wear a tutu - this was the party accessory du jour last year at DD's school parties.

this the prom dress

i know that one is for little kids, but i spy straps

alexandre · 20/05/2009 09:29

Misdee - I think that is a great suggestion - thanks. Will see how it goes down after school.

Shrug or pretty cardi over?

MillyR · 20/05/2009 09:33

I have had a look at the prom dresses worn in the film, and they do seem to have straps.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/05/2009 09:35

I think YABabitU, basically it is fancy dress, dressing up clothes, no different to being a fairy or whatever when they were 5. Yes they are emulating different things/people now but it is still just make believe IMHO.

If they were asking for a strapless prom dress and a boob job so they could fill it then you may have a point!

In any case, gabriella didnt go to the prom in the film but the one she wore in the show about the prom was this one, it is not exactly tarty is it? Quite pretty really.

PurplePillow · 20/05/2009 09:48

The last dress that misdee linked to is not just for little girls, my dd has it in 11yrs and it gorgeous on.

It has little thin straps and I got her a little cream shrug to wear over it and she loved it.

I agree with strapless and pre-teen girls don't mix.

bought this for DD11 for her year 6 leaving party. It does look very pretty on her and the skirt is much fuller than it looks in the picture.
Just hope she doesn't grow much more as it is a perfect fit on her at the moment

TrillianAstra · 20/05/2009 10:15

That' pretty bruffin - she it's out of stock in age 16 or I might be tempted myself

(what size is 'age 16' in grownup sizes do you think? and what 16 year old would buy something from the children's range?)

mamadiva · 20/05/2009 10:16

Kylie?
