DH works for a company which contracts to another company who is a contractor for MOD. Therefore his work is based On an MOD site. Just phoned me to say health and safety have shut the whole camp so he has tomorrow (at least) off. Asbestos has been found in all buildings
He works away so will get a full day of R&R in complete peace.
I am also panicking that the contract will have to stop temporarily meaning he might be stood down indefinately. Although he will get some pay during a stand down period, it will be much lower than his usual rate and also no overtime.
Am so jealous of his free time and panicking could have him at home for an extended period getting under my feet all day
AIBU to be not too worried about his health and more irked about having him home

Generally asbestos in buildings isn't a problem until it starts to be messed with (during demolition/renovation etc.). Legally, asbestos has to be "labelled" so that any future contractors/occupants know exactly what they're are dealing with. I suspect the day off might just to get it all labelled... hopefully !

I would have thought that if the asbestos has to be removed it's going to take quite a while to sort out.

YABkind of U but I can see exactly where you're coming from

mumblechum · 18/05/2009 18:36

I do like the word irked.

YANBU actually because you have a good vocabulary and can therefore be forgiven anything.

Northernlurker · 18/05/2009 18:45

Well unless he's doing the removing there really shouldn't be too much of a risk and therefore yanbu. It is a major pain to have them hanging about the house! Dh had the nerve to get made redundant when I was off on maternity leave. I was very supportive to him as he looked for work

hellywobs · 18/05/2009 18:46

Asbestos is a huge cancer risk and appallingly, is often present in our schools. It may be a pain but it is one of those instances where it's not health and safety gone mad, but very sensible.

Sassybeast · 18/05/2009 20:06

YABU. I'd prefer to have a few days off whilst they sort it rather than risk the potential consequence. Google Mesothelioma for further info.

They will have to carry out investigations into the type of asbestos, and also what condition it's in. Then they will make a decision as to whether it needs to be removed (unlikely) or whether it should just be marked as such.

Asbestos in buildings tends to be white asbestos which is not AS bad as blue or brown, although still not great to work with.

But don't forget, asbestos was used incredibly heavily throughout buildings all over the UK, and asbestos related deaths are still relatively unusual in comparison to the number of people who have been exposed.

Lucky him having a couple of days off!
