To wonder why some people appoint themselves as food police?

After a particularly busy morning, playgroup and then swimming, I went to the supermarket and decided to treat DS2 and myself to a cafe lunch. I got a sausage roll and a piece of carrot cake for us to share, as we were starving and we've had lots of healthy meals this week, so I thought sod it.

I'm happily balancing my tray in the queue to pay and an older man proceeds to look down his nose at me, peruse my tray and tell me that there is a lot of calories in said food items. 'It's ok' I reply, 'Just a treat. We've done loads of exercise this week.' The man proceeds to then tut and mumble something to his wife. I laughed it off at the time, but it's been bugging me all afternoon. Why do strangers feel they have the right to comment on my choice of food? They don't know how much exercise my family do (quite alot btw), or what our diet is like. I'd helped him with putting hot water in his bloody teapot too!

Yanbu. I hope you aren't shocked however. There's an awful lot of it about.

wotulookinat · 15/05/2009 18:20

Some people just can't keep their stupid opinions to themselves.
Carrot cake yummy!

PennyBenjamin · 15/05/2009 18:20

Yes, because I'm sure those people fed their children only on organic, non-GM, low-GI, low-fat (low-taste...) food. Actually, I bet they don't have children, which is why they can make comments like that. Idiots.

Children should eat everything, just not all the time. The only thing you get by restricting foods is children with food issues.

You know all this already. I know it's annoying, but try to let it go, and comfort yourself with the memory of your little boy enjoying his food!

What was he eating? A stick of celery?

grumblinalong · 15/05/2009 18:26

LOL rolo. I didn't see because it was a hot food order...not a salad!

What a rude man.

You have no need to justify your food choices or the amount of exercise you do to a stranger in a cafe.

A more appropriate response would have been something like "I'm sorry, are you talking to me? What an odd thing to say!"

End of conversation. End of thoughts of conversations.

Don't give another thought to this silly eejit.

Really, there is nothing wrong with sausage rolls or carrot cake, as you know very well when you haven't had your confidence knocked by a mean old man you don't know.

KingRolo · 15/05/2009 18:37

If it happens again tell him the carrot cake is one of your 5 a day.

TeaOneSugar · 15/05/2009 18:45

It wasn't my PIL was it? They can't keep their opinions to themselves in public either. Sooo rude.

I take a similar line to skidoodle, old age isn't a good enough excuse for rudeness.

RedCharityBonney · 15/05/2009 18:50

Oh feck... what am I going to do NOW when I'm 80? I was going to be a right rude old bag....

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/05/2009 18:53

Children need calories. Ignore. I'm amazed you tried to explain yourself. How patient you must be!
