Although I do agree with him.

A good friend of mine works in a warehouse. He's worked there years and gets on with most of the other guys. One of the guys had an important job to do with money. Friend liked this guy who was good at his job and friendly etc...
So, turns out the guy's been fiddling, buying computer games on mass instead of paying his mortgage, then started 'borrowing' cash from work. He's totalled around 15k. He got found out and was sacked.
The AIBU question is ...there was a wip round for the guy. Friend refused to put into it and was called a tight arse by some workmates. I think he did right. If everyone dipped in then there'd be no jobs for the others.

A wip round for a thief?

TheProvincialLady · 15/05/2009 11:36

They had a whip round for a fraudster? Are they idiots? In this economic climate that kind of fraud could have brought the company down and their jobs with it. Your friend is the only sane one and HINBU.

crokky · 15/05/2009 11:36

My gut feeling on this is that I would have put some money into the pot for this guy. It seems like he has some major problems, but he hasn't killed anyone and his crimes were against money rather than people. He dipped in because he has a problem it looks like.

lal123 · 15/05/2009 11:36

a whip round for someone who was rightly sacked???

bubblagirl · 15/05/2009 11:37

i dont think anyone is being unreasonable they all new his circumstances and obviously felt sorry for him and they wanted to help

your friend had the right to say no they all had a choice and shouldn't be too hard on your friend but i guess some of them are on a more personal level with this guy

crokky · 15/05/2009 11:38

(but your friend is within his rights not to contribute)

SouthMum · 15/05/2009 11:38

No your friend is definitely NBU. Bet the workmates would feel diff. if he pinched dosh from their wallets. Why should your friend help bail this guy out?

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2009 11:39

I wouldn't contribute for someone who had defrauded the company.

Have they recovered the money at all? Is the comany small and therefore seriously affected by the loss of 15k? Or can they absorb the loss?

poshwellies · 15/05/2009 11:40

Sod feeling sorry for a thief, your friend took the right stance.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/05/2009 11:42

Good on your friend - that's what I say.

The only person BU is the thief.

Curiousmama · 15/05/2009 11:43

Don't know if they'll recoup any as he's back at his mum's and house being repossessed. His gf's left him.

I think I'd have a pinch of sympathy if it weren't for the fact he was buying at least 3 or 4 video games a week, like a batchelor with lots of cash. They used to shake their heads wondering how he did it?

Curiousmama · 15/05/2009 11:44

Oh and it is a small firm that's doing ok thank God.

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 15/05/2009 12:24

I'll tell him it's not just him and I then I must say I gasped in shock and he was happy not to feel the odd one out.

AMumInScotland · 15/05/2009 12:39

I'd say he's totally not BU - if the guy had been defrauding the company to buy food / medicine for sick relative / insert other worthy cause, then I'd feel some sympathy for his predicament. Doing this in order to buy computer games - he's just been taking the piss.

Curiousmama · 15/05/2009 12:59

exactly AMIS.

the work mates wanted to do a whip for someone who got quite rightly sacked for stealing?

blonde wouldnt be putting her hand into her pocket for this man

YanknCock · 15/05/2009 16:06

Think what your friend did was perfectly reasonable. Would have done the same.

Kimi · 15/05/2009 16:06

YANBU he deserves to be jobless, he should be taken to court not given a wip round.

SamsMama · 15/05/2009 16:23

Um...is a whip round like passing the hat? I'm guessing so, in which case your friend is definitely NBU. It's not like he was let go for no reason.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/05/2009 16:27

yes
