to let DD have the dog in bed?

I can't decide. It is too hard.
DD desperately wants to have her dog in her bed. He is very cuddly.
DH doesn't want her to. Thinks dogs should sleep downstairs. The big dog is happy sleeping downstairs (on the sofa to deter fecking burglers). the small dog (DDs own) is also hppy in his box in the kitchen.
DD is slightly traumatised by being burgled but is playing on it a bit. Thinks the dog wil get stolen.
I don't really care. I do worry that in 5 years time she'll trot off to university leaving me to have to have dog in my bed.
so should i let her or not?

it wouldn't bother me. in fact, it's quite sweet.

as long as you don't mind dog hair etc on bedding and that kind of stuff.

FfreckleFface · 14/05/2009 21:18

It's a tough one. I would dearly love to have my dogs in my bed while Bloke is away, but they are so good downstairs in their basket, and there certainly isn't room for us all when Bloke is here.

I think downstairs is the best bet - lets the dog know his place

Thunderduck · 14/05/2009 21:21

I'd allow it. I always had my dog in my bed and there were never any problems. And even now our current dog often shares the bed with us.

ProstetnicVogonJeltz · 14/05/2009 21:21

he is very sweet. and not much hairy.

Nope. The dog's place is wherever anyone wants him to be. But IME most dogs don't much care to sleep on beds - he'd probably sit there a bit looking unhappy, and then jump off wagging his tail apologetically and go back to the kitchen.

wotulookinat · 14/05/2009 21:35

No, don't do it. I am a dog lover and used to always have my doggies on (in ) my bed, but not any more. There was a lady on This Morning a while back whose dog had attacked her in his sleep and bitten off her nose. Don't take the risk.

ProstetnicVogonJeltz · 14/05/2009 21:37

that'll put her off.

I'm not anti dog in bed so much... but you are right to think DD will bugger off to uni and leave you with dog in your bed.

I know, I did it to my parents

wotulookinat · 14/05/2009 21:38

apparantly the dog was dreaming and did it. He then had to be put to sleep and the woman was faced with loads of operations.

Alambil · 14/05/2009 21:40

er, no - furniture is for humans!

fourkids · 14/05/2009 21:43

DD's dog goes up to bed with her and they sleep in each other arms...paws...legs until we go to bed, when dog has to go into her own bed downstairs.

Other DCs take the cats to bed with them.

When youngest DD is feeling particularly manipulative she cries and says 'I want my pony in my bed' because she knows it can't be allowed and therefore she will be able to keep on sniffing sadly and making big sad eyes!

One DC once smuggled a chicken into the bedroom. But they are not allowed in bed.

poshwellies · 14/05/2009 21:43

Don't do it-our dog takes up all the room! and he's only a small mutt(some nights we have cat and dog and a bloody 6 yr old in/on our double bed)I long for a queen size and a full nights sleep.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 14/05/2009 21:45

No, very bad idea.

FRom the dog's POV it puts him on the same pecking status in the pack as your DD.

And actually, he should know that he's below her.

hmc · 14/05/2009 21:47

Gross - and I say that as a dog owner. Dogs -have ticks, halitosis and eat shit. They are okay for a cuddle now and then (strictly no licking ) as long as hands are washed afterwards.

Dogs in bed - yuckity yuck. Might be okay in bedroom on rug on floor...

hmc · 14/05/2009 21:48

Mind you I am a reluctant dog owner

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/05/2009 21:54

fourkids - can I move in with you? I'd love to have pets like that all over the place.

four kids your house sounds manic. You have dog, cat, pony and chickens? and four kids?

fourkids · 15/05/2009 16:53

Pizazz, too many dogs, cats, ponies and chickens (all the kids can stay though )

OhYouBadBadKitten, it is a mad house - one more won't make the slightest bit of difference, so pack a bag and come on over. Bring animals!

marymungoandmidge · 15/05/2009 16:59

No way, sorry...! Cant think of anything more revolting but, then I'm so not a Dog lover...

Nekabu · 15/05/2009 17:05

How about a compromise - the dog can sleep in dd's bedroom but on a dog bed, not on hers.

YanknCock · 15/05/2009 18:27

Difficult. . .I used to love having my dog sleep in the bed with me (was 5 when we got her). Usually she'd stay for a while, get bored of me moving about, and jump off in favour of sleeping under my bed.

When I lived alone, I had my dog sleep in the bed with me.

If I had a dog now, I probably wouldn't allow it because of being pregnant--expecting to have baby in the bed for feeding and such and wouldn't want dog to accidentally trample.

Maybe the basket in your daughter's room is a good compromise.

loobeylou · 15/05/2009 18:33

can't believe so many dogs in/on human beds !!

my parents dogs were never allowed upstairs, they have to know their place!

but it explains the thread the other week about people washing their sheets very frequently, you'd need to.

FfreckleFface · 15/05/2009 19:46

We actually have this issue in reverse. I keep having to pull little Ff (15months) out of the basket when she climbs in for a bit of a cuddle. It is cute, and pretty hilarious, but she usually tries it just before bed, when she is all bathed and moisturised, so gets covered in dog hair.

MillyR · 15/05/2009 19:49

I think it depends on the breed of dog; some dogs like sleeping on beds and some don't. We have 2 dogs on our bed with us, but our old dog was a Border Collie and they prefer their own space.

It might be a bit unfair on the other dog if you let one up and keep one down.
