Perfectly fine-in fact very good for her.

MaDuggar · 12/05/2009 19:21

My daughters, aged 7 & 9, walk a mile to school by themselves, crossing 3 roads (2 with lollipop people, 1 with pelican crossing).

for a one off not a problem-what else could you do

but on a regular basis then not at her age

yes all children have to learn independence but i personally wouldnt let her walk alone again unless major emergancy

Snorbs · 12/05/2009 19:43

I'd say 8yo is fine provided you know your DC is responsible enough and the journey isn't too risky with roads etc. My DS started walking to school on his own from about 9.5yo although the shine's worn off it now so he usually comes with me and DD

My DC's school won't allow children below year 3 from leaving unless there is someone there to collect them.

Good for you!

My 8yo ds walks home on his own: 10/15 minute walk, 3 roads to cross- two with lollipop ladies, one with traffic lights. He is also allowed to go to the local shops on his own.

My 7yo goes alone sometimes, and comes back alone sometimes. No big deal. She goes to the local shop and to friends' houses too, all within about 1/2 mile radius.

sounds fine, and i'd let her do it more often if i was you, i let dd1 (9) walk to and from school herself, which is about 5 minutes walk away.

Dillydaydreamer · 13/05/2009 15:37

That sounds perfectly fine given the close proximity of the school and only one road with lollipop lady . I would let my dd do it in those circumstances. Different if there are many unmanned crossings to make or school is quite a distance.

Both are being unreasonable imo.

Dillydaydreamer · 13/05/2009 15:39

I would let her do it every day if she wanted to, she obviously was responsible enough and got herself to school fine.

blondie80 · 13/05/2009 15:58

sounds completly fine by my standards.

we moved to about the same distance from the school as you have mentioned and dd walks home everyday since she was 8, lets herself in and wakes dh (who works permanent nights).

It was to cut out paying for the day care which was costing £350/mth for after school only!
