To think that if you can't drive any faster than 35mph..........

You shouldn't be driving on a busy motoway!

The speed limit is 70mph and yes, there is not a minimum speed limit but 35mph FGS!!!!

Drivers like this should be banned, they are not safe and the one today was driving with his nose practically touching his windscreen.
I bet he was driving like this because he couldn't see the road or cars in front.

ok, rant over, just needed to get that off my chest!

YANBU.

I think you can get done for driving too slowly on the motorway (dangerous driving, obstructing traffic? under something like that) no idea what counts as too slow though.

GreatBallsOfFluff · 12/05/2009 17:47

YANBU - 35 you're right it's very dangerous to do that speed on a motorway (unless of course there's the usual traffic jams)

BernardsCat · 12/05/2009 17:48

oh god and driving instructors taking absolute novices out in rush hour

readyfornumber2and3 · 12/05/2009 17:48

YANBU
In many ways slow drivers are more responsible for accidents than those who speed.

LadyOfWaffle · 12/05/2009 17:51

YANBU, they are dangerous.

Cladon · 12/05/2009 17:55

YANBU - and I think there is a sort of minimum limit (ie police would pull you over if they think it is dangerously slow). My pet hate is people who drive at 40mph everywhere - on 60mph single carriageway (tempts faster drivers to overtake) and through built-up areas (it's 30 for a reason). Grrr

roulade · 12/05/2009 17:59

I thought the minimum speed on a motorway was 30mph.

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 18:04

He is lucky that nobody hit him, several cars came speeding up, overtook him and I, luckily I was coming off at the next junction.

But can see how easily he could have caused a horrible accident, car going too fast approaching him, swerves to avoid hitting him and then crashes into the cars that were overtaking them.

wonder if there is anyone around who's dp/dh/dw is in the police?

ChasingSquirrels · 12/05/2009 18:10

no minimum motorway speed

but presumably could be done for dangerous driving or another driving offense.

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 18:20

thanks for that link, there were other roads that he could have taken,

maybe once you get to say, the age of 65 - then you shouldn't be allowed to drive on motorways

might have to start another AIBU about caravan drivers on single track roads, who refuse to use passing places, to allow cars to overtake them

OP posts:
Poledra · 12/05/2009 18:23

Oooh, Flappy, I agree that was dangerous, but I can imagine my 73-yo dad's reaction if you tried to ban him from the motorway (he's a very good driver, BTW, has never had an at-fault accident in his life).

ChasingSquirrels · 12/05/2009 18:24

bet you won't be thinking that when you are 64 . I know what you mean though.

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 18:27

Don't think my parents would be too happy either, they are in their early 60's, both still work and travel a lot and have no intention of giving up either

apologies for being ageist!!

OP posts:
SalBySea · 12/05/2009 18:29

FlappytheBath - 65 - some people still work at that age!

and my mother is in her 60s and shes a pretty good driver! there is no reason why she should spend hours on back roads when she visits!

deste · 12/05/2009 19:01

I thought according to the highway code you had to drive to the speed of the road.

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 19:18

SalBySea, didn't you notice the , I was NOT being serious.

If my parents (I mentioned their age earlier) did not frequently drive on motorways, then they wouldn't be able to work, travel or help me out with childcare.

pointydog · 12/05/2009 19:21

we'll all be working till 70. Can you imagine.

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 19:24

Was hoping to sort of retire at 55 and do something completely diiferent, the prospect of working until I am 70 fills me with dread!!

OP posts:
pointydog · 12/05/2009 19:29

I went too far when I said 'we all' but I haven't heard of anyone retiring at 55 among th e average members of the population for a long long time.

It'll be good for us

letsgostrawberrypicking · 12/05/2009 19:40

we should be like USA and have signs with the minimum speed, no dodderly pains in the necks there. DH working partner got pulled over and fined for going too slow when he was going passed a speed camera. His work mates (though slightly sympathetic!) were quietly pleased as it taught him you dont SLAM on your breaks at the first sign of one as he was always doing

oops sorry! It all went a bit funny then!

FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 19:45

Don't plan to retire at 55, but leave the area of work I am currently in, it isn't really the type of work people do past 50-55 and most leave and go on to other things.

Dh's work is the same, so we plan to leave the rat race and run a bunkhouse in the north west of scotland.

OP posts:
FlappytheBat · 12/05/2009 19:46

letsgo..., I wonder if they would ever do the same here?

OP posts:
letsgostrawberrypicking · 12/05/2009 20:00

cant imagine it would be too hard to do, wish they would!
Off subject but another thing they do which makes perfect sense is you have to pay for your petrol before you use it - the pumps are locked before you do that, then programmed for $40 worth or whatever you have paid. And if you use credit card you must show your drivers license or they dont accept it. No driving off without paying there!
