to feel pressured into buying school photos, and object to 'pressure sales methods' ?

dd had a photo taken at school recently. not regular school photo, but pics taken by a visitor to the school who came to do a dispay with birds of prey. the pic is of dd with an owl on her shoulder

anyway, a while later, they sent home 2 large photos in card frames, priced £10 for the pair. the idea is that you either send in payment or return the photos.

i felt really pressured into buying the photos, as i can't bear the thought of returning them, only so that they can be destroyed.

i really object to their sales technique, and think that they shouldve sent a tiny proof so that you can either pay to have the pics produced or not.

the thing that annoys me is that you'd think that there'd be some relation between the price of the pics and the production costs. clearly they cost almost nothing to produce, as they will inevitably throw many away and seem totally unconcerned about this.

aibu to feel cross about this?

maybe i should add a PS.......... AIBU to even contemplate 'losing' the photos in protest?

Can you not just scan the pics onto computer? [cheap and dishonest emoticon}

You are not being unreasonable to be pissed off.

schmu · 12/05/2009 14:01

scanner broken...hey, could take them to work!

I have a feeling that if you have been sent goods unsolicited you are under no obligation to return them/pay for them anyway?

AnarchyAunt · 12/05/2009 14:13

YANBU by the way. It'd piss me off. Did the school ask your permission for outside agencies to come in and photograph your DC?

EffieGadsby · 12/05/2009 14:15

Its true, you don't have to return unsolicited goods sent to you. Says so here on the BERR website. Keep the pictures to teach the school a lesson!

schmu · 12/05/2009 14:20

thanks. i did wonder about the whole insolicited goods thing, actually. thanks for link. not sure i'm brave ebough to ignore the reminder letter sent from scholl bursar, though.

actually, wtf are the school doing wasting man hours chasing this up???

I used to diligently buy school photos.

But soon got fed up when I realised I didnt really even like the photo that I had put pride and place on my sideboard.

So no more.

But I'm a big old meanie !

AnarchyAunt · 12/05/2009 14:24

I'd just keep the photos and say that as they were sent to you unsolicited you will not be paying for them or returning them thank you very much.

If you signed a consent form it might be that it included a bit about having to buy them afterwards though. If not I'd be asking why commercial agencies were being allowed to photograph my DC without my permission.

oldspotraver · 12/05/2009 14:25

Have to say the pic I have of DS1 with an owl is the best school photo ever and people do comment on it being different from normal bland school photos.

But dont think YABU as it gets too much ...and Ive got it all to come again with DS2

stinkymonkey · 12/05/2009 15:02

We also had the owl people come, but the school did a half price deal, so we got the photos for £5. I think the school felt guilty because it wasn't long after the motivational yo-yo people had been in - now those I really did object to.

Like you I mainly bought because I couldn't bear the thought of them destroying th photos. Though they are nice snaps YANBU and I bet you're not the only parent who feels like that - do you have a class rep to complain to?

junglist1 · 12/05/2009 15:10

Either scan them at work, or keep them and keep sctum. You'll hopefully then get lost in the whole admin process.

chegirl · 12/05/2009 20:24

I never buy school photos. My friends are scandalised that I am so cheap and uncaring. I think that school photos are horrible and manage to make my beautiful children look awful (how is THAT possible?).

I keep the proof as a reminder of that year even though it has PROOF written all over it.

I remember looking forward to my DS2's fist preschool photos. I was horrified to discover they were those vile cute tacky nostaligic victorian style pictures. Horrible - especially as my DS has dreadlocks. He looked most odd . As I live in the East End I didnt feel that the whole victorian waif motif had 'romantic' conatations.

But maybe I am just a grumpy old bag.

So back to the point YANBU. They shouldnt send home photos you have not asked for. Everyone knows how we hate the thought of unbought photos being destroyed. Our little darlings's faces being shredded - how could they

MANATEEequineOHARA · 12/05/2009 20:41

I always end up buying rather than face the thought of the pictures 'destroyed'

I would definitely keep them and not pay, considering you are doing nothing wrong in doing so anyway!
