To ask dh to get up early to deal with huge loofah in ds's room this morning?

Suppose technically this should read 'was I being unreasonable?'. Ok so at 6.30 this morning ds(4) comes into our room, 'Mummy there's a loofah on the wall above my bed'. (For those who don't know what loofah means I understand it's an mn term for those 8 legged spawns of the devil).

Now I really do hate these little fuckers, I am a terrible arachophobe but I went in to have a look coz sometimes he's just talking about one of those spindly ones that hang around in the corners and never move which I don't really have a problem with but no, it's a great black hairy monster, sat on the wall above his bed.

I go back in to my room and try to wake dh but he is having none of it so I wait, quivering, for his alarm to go off in 20 mins time. When he woke up he was still refusing to sort it out, I had to plead in a very undignified manner but eventually he went in there and dealt with it using the old glass/card method. I am obviously now very grateful but I think he thinks it's a bit pathetic of me to run to him to sort it out and not deal with them myself.

My question for other arachnophobes, do your dh/dps accept responsibilty for loofah disposal without argument? AIBU to expect mine to do this? Or do I need to try and 'get a grip'?

Yeah I know Morloth, I'm not saying it's rational or justified - it's a phobia and therefore irrational and odd in it's nature. And believe me, spiders is not one of the odd phobias.

The stupid thing is, I'm a psychologist who treats phobias at work (with CBT) all the time. I'm intending to get a colleague to work through the exposure hierarchy and desensitation with me at some point. It's funny but we all in my service have something that we won't/can't work with. For me it's spiders, for my supervisor rats and someone else vomit. We just let someone else pick up the referral.

I can see thread titles at work but not threads so i've spent all day wondering how the hell somebody could have a loofah needing dealt with!!!

Morloth · 12/05/2009 19:04

Oh no! I meant I was odd for not removing them!

JaceyBee · 12/05/2009 22:05

Spiders are very small, as are the number of people who have a real, honest to god, phobia of them... the rest of you just need to learn to make friends with them cute, harmless and SMALL.... don't be so wussy!!

I've always been the spider remover... bare hands, would hate to hurt them with anything... when travelling my friend hated them and I would always remove them from the tent etc... one day as I was removing and admiring one... she thoughtfully asked... do you think any of the spiders over here (Europe) are deadly.... I spent more time removing and less time holding/admiring them after that as we couldn't find out if they were or not!
