to not want hairdressers to be so determined to "give me body" that I leave the salon looking like Robert Smith?

it drives me nuts!
Have moved to a new city and trying so hard to find a hairdresser I like, just been to my fourth one and they have all been awful!

I have very fine hair, and they keep telling me that whilst cutting my hair. Errrm, yes, I had noticed.
I am by no means a freak but they get so gung-ho about giving me more volume that they spray and dry and crimp and God knows what else and then looked pleased with themselves when I think I look AWFUL. I dont even like big hair!

ugh. useless

God yes I hate that also. Say no to the hairspray. I'm sure they do it to take the piss.

Kimi · 08/05/2009 20:29

I think fine hair suits a elfin cut, they can not go all Dallas on that

moondog · 08/05/2009 20:30

As long as you do not waer huge white trainers and badly applied lipstick, you should be ok.

cheshirekitty · 08/05/2009 20:30

Who is Robert Smith?

BigBellasBeerBelly · 08/05/2009 20:34

Um yes I'm far too young to know who robert smith is too.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 08/05/2009 20:35

nice

Meglet · 08/05/2009 20:36

YANBU. i get it all the time. I left the salon looking like one of Whitesnake last time .

And they always say the diffuser will work on my long wavy hair, and I always tell them it won't and it will just frizz it. Do they listen no, i end up with frizzy hair.

I always tie my hair back within seconds of getting out of the sight of the hairdressers.

(I know who robert smith is )

cheshirekitty · 08/05/2009 20:46

Not too young to know who Robert Smith is, just not hip enough by the looks of him.

zanz1bar · 08/05/2009 20:47

Who are the whitesnakes?

Now i am of a generation that aped robert smith and souxsie soux and hoping i can carry it off now in a mad old bat kinda style these days.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 08/05/2009 20:48

meglet I too have long wavy hair and they can't wait to get at it with a diffuser.

I get this type of effect, but bigger...

Joolyjoolyjoo · 08/05/2009 20:53

A bit that people don't know who Robert Smith is! I must be old..

I know what you mean about hairdressers. I have long, very thick, VERY curly red hair, which seems to bring out some desire in more hairdressers to make me into Bonnie langford, then exclaim about my "amazing" hair- it's not amazing- it's ridiculous!!

I finally found a hairdresser who listens to me and knows my hair. She has been cutting my hair for the last nine years, and I refuse to go to anyone else, despite the fact that she has moved to another salon and become more and more expensive over the years. I trust her now to the point where I am confident to let her pretty much do what she likes- you can't put a price on that!

Meglet · 08/05/2009 20:53

LOL bigbella

BigBellasBeerBelly · 08/05/2009 20:59

phwoarrrr

Meglet and i are in the lucky position of being able to choose which member of any popular 80's rock combo we would like our hair styled as, every single time we go to the hairdresser. Happy days

halia · 08/05/2009 21:21

its horrible, I have short hair which is relativly fine but there's a fair amount of it.
I like to wear it slightly messy and choppy and spikey, I DON'T spend ages styling it and I hate product except for wax/gum.
I invariably come out withhuge puffy hair that makes me look like I'm about 50.

I get out, wash it and then style it myself.

The only hairdresser I've ever had who cut it well was before I moved he was great and I'm honestly thinking of taking a 3 hr train trip back next time my hair needs cutting (except for the minor fact that it would double my aircut bill)

TheSmallClanger · 08/05/2009 21:44

Halia, I am the same. Although I like the way my hairdresser cuts my hair, I always end up looking like a newsreader once she has attacked me with the blow dryer.

SeverusIsMySlave · 09/05/2009 00:05

Robert Smith was my first ever crush, and still my biggest ......mmmm men wearing makeup are dreamy.....

missmiss · 09/05/2009 00:28

I am very young and I have heard of Robert Smith!

I have the opposite problem - my hair is very flat and, whatever they do in the salon to give it volume, I cannot recreate it at home.

blahdiblahblah · 09/05/2009 07:36

TheSMallClanger - "newsreader" LOL
Yes, they seem to add another 20 years with poofey hairstyles!

Well, on waking, I appear more Elvis than Robert. Most definitely not a good thing.

Am off to wash and attempt a more "Katie Holmes" style... will report back.

OP posts:
crazycanuck · 09/05/2009 08:00

Halia - are you me?! My hair is exactly the same, I hate 'product' (as hairdressers always call it!) and I hate fussing with my hair so also have it short and messy-like. Until I found my present hairdresser I had the 80's helmet hair nightmare at salons too. my hairdresser now is so good I have followed him through 3 salons.

ah Robert Smith...how I loved him back in the day...

screamingabdab · 09/05/2009 09:46

blahdiblahdiblah I have the same problem with hairdressers, except my hair is really thick (you could probably remove half of it and I'd still have enough - in fact come to think of it that theory was proven after I had my DSs and dramatic hair loss).

Over the years I've had so many hairdressers who don't know what to do with it, and I've discovered it really is just all about having someone who is a really skillful cutter (as crazycanuck says), and the right style.

I found my stylist by stopping someone in the street who had similar hair to me, and asking who cut their hair.

PrammyMammy · 09/05/2009 12:55

Robert Smith was lovely! Him and Boy George. mmm.

I think a lot of the more expensive hair dressers are right into creative styles at the moment. I was a hair model at some TIGI classes and every time i looked like a microphone afterwards. It was okay after i washed and styled it myself.
But if you ask for just a cut, not a style, might be better.
I found a cheap hair dresser who cuts my hair really well, gives it a straighten/blowdry style, but doesn't cover it in product (probably why she charges less)
You could also chat with a few different ones before you let any of them have their way with your hair :P

BigBellasBeerBelly · 09/05/2009 13:12

prammy that's my tip too!

I have returned to the hairdresser I went to as a teen, cheapest in town, I don't even get them to blow dry it. Just wash n simple cut and it looks better than it has in years. £10 a pop

My hair hates chemicals products and heat and so keeping away from the posher/trendier salons has done it no end of good

PrammyMammy · 09/05/2009 13:22

It's true eh! They prob do charge less because they don't spend so much on frying your hair and covering it in chemicals.
The girl who does mines works in her mums little salon. You don't even need to make an appointment.
They always listen to you too and take time to do it how you like. I find expensive salons try and race through the cut.
