no

sometimes they have reciprocal arrangements. I would try and buy a day pass - that was common in Egypt when I was there - was about £6 for the day.

Nettee · 07/05/2009 17:52

I am planning to do it next time I go skiing. I spoke to the more upmarket hotel in advance and they said no problem - it will cost x amount per day. So not cheeky at all and much cheaper than staying in the 5 star.

traceybath · 07/05/2009 17:56

Fine if you're allowed and have permission but otherwise extremely cheeky.

Also potentially embarassing as you're escorted from the premises.

newpup · 07/05/2009 18:00

Absolutely fine if you ask and pay for a day pass. Otherwise cheeky and cheap.

If you want to use the facilities pay for them or accept you can not afford them.

mosschops30 · 07/05/2009 18:01

Is a 5* pool that much different.

TBH I would rather pay a bit more and stay in a 3 or 4* where the rooms and facilities will be better but not cost you the earth

TallulahToo · 07/05/2009 18:08

Great idea if you have the courage to go ahead and no awkward pangs of worry. Though not great as a guest of the 5* who paid the full price!

If you buy a meal or some drinks at the 5 star while you are there I expect some hotel's won't mind if you use the pool on the odd day or morning etc. All inclusive hotels will charge you to get in on a day pass.

If you intend to take your own pack lunch and drinks and sit there all day, everyday, then that is another matter. Hotel management do not appreciate non resident guests taking advantage.

And if I (were lucky enough) to stay in a 5 star and I have paid for it, I do not want to stay in a hotel that allows the riff raff ( ) 2 star guests to sit next to me all day eating their packed lunch on "my" sunbed under "my parasol" ! You get the idea. You will meet people like this.

I suspect 5 star hotels have procedures in place to stop people who are not guests using their facilities - otherwise any Tom, Dick or Harry would be coming in!

Legacy · 07/05/2009 18:17

When we stayed in a 5* place in Portugal they had various checks in place to make sure the only people using the pool were residents of the hotel/ resort etc.

Fine if they offer a day pass and you pay, otherwise you'll just get found out!

namebacon · 07/05/2009 18:21

No, that's perfectly acceptable behaviour

whilst your at it, don't forget to pay only for bed and breakfast but nick loads of rolls and ham and cheese and yoghurt off the breakfast buffet for your lunch.

Also, drink all the drinks out of the mini-bar and replace the vodka/gin drinks with water and the whisky/rum drinks with vinegar so it looks like you havent had any and won't be charged for them.

Finally, don't forget to take the towels, soap, shampoo, sewing kit, shoe cleaning kit, stationery, and batteries out of the remote control when you leave.

Some of the large chains like the Marriott's and Hilton's don't mind guest coming in as long as they BUY something.

After all you can eat in their restaurants in the evenings and sit and buy drinks at the bars.

Obviously it will be 5 star prices.

In a funny way this is like buying an economy ticket and trying to use the Premium loo! It's a bit of a no no.

People shouldn't take advantage, and should be considerate, and also expect to be found out as you will be the only one carrying a huge rucksack around and towels that aren't the right colour as the ones for guests used at the pool (they ask your room number and normally expect you to sign for them). And I am not suggesting you take some to blend in either.

The 2 star pool can't be that bad can it? Star ratings are given to hotels for all their facilities (the more the better). If your hotel is small it won't have as many and the pool may be great anyway.

Buy a day pass or use your own pool.
