To wonder who I should ask to certify a birth certificate?

I'm certain I got ds1's certified at my GPs. Just got off the phone to a very confused receptionist who had no clue what I was talking about! I explained I need it to open a bank account for ds2 and dd which confused her even further! She checked with the doctor and said they wouldn't do it. I thought it would be a pretty standard request, am I being unreasonable to assume the GP would be the obvious choice for the job?

I am confused as well

you take the BC to the bank and they will open the account IIRC - you as a parent need ID as well

I've never had mine certified- nor my children's. Just tank birth certificate with you to the bank- it will be enough- you'll need your own and another id if its not oyur bank but don't know why ypou wnat it cetified

Certify the birth certificate? What does that mean? Get someone to say it's true? I've never heard of that.
Can't you use you child benefit letters or something? Or your child tax credits award notice alongside birth certificate?

You only need to certify it if you photocopy it. So, as you will bring the original to the bank, no certification will be needed

I've got to post it, nearest branch is a fair old hike so I thought this way would be less hassle. I should have known better really!

The postoffice will do certified copies of documents for you - there are forms on line as well - so you can just print it off, fill it in and take it to the nearest post office with your original documents! (NB best to do this as not all post office staff realise they offer this service)

oldraver · 07/05/2009 17:25

just get a couple of spare copies online, they dont cost much

IotasCat · 07/05/2009 17:39

Birth certificates are crown copyright and should not be photocopied and certified.

You should get additional certified copies from the register office - you can order them by phone or online as oldraver said

do you have any friends who are solicitors? I certify copies of things the whole time (my I sound interesting )

IotasCat · 07/05/2009 17:45
