to be pissed off that our councils "street improvement scheme" has turned our street into a hoodie meeting point?

I have a 2 and a half month old. Having lived through 2 months of bloody disruption (think drilling so loud that the entire house shakes) with the junction of the street where I live (we live on a nice quiet street, backs on to cemetery so really peaceful house, despite being 5 minutes away from a bustling high street) with a another street being dug up by the council for the fifth time since we moved in over a year ago to create a "more pleasant place to walk, cycle, play and socialise" according to the council, the work finally finished on Friday. Last night, the junction outside my home (and infact the wall to my front garden - oh and the path right up to my bloody front door) was populated by a gang of about 20 hoodies making an ungodly racket under my bedroom window until past 11 for the first time ever. AIBU to be really quite pissed off at this???

Oh yes, and I have a 3 year old - and there was NO room in the house where you could escape the bloody noise.

YANBU
Get onto the council's website, find out who your local councillors are and get on to them about the problem. It's their job to raise these things on your behalf.

What work has been carried out that would attract the hoodies?

dinkystinky · 03/05/2009 08:59

Ok - clearly being unreasonable then...

YABateenybitU, but due to lack of sleep you are excused

The reason I say a wee bit unreasonable is because it is the first night this has happened since the work finished so probably just a novelty of being able to meet there for now.

What kind of work did they do?

Don't comlain now if it's still going on next weekend then by all means complain and if it were me I would phone police you may find a lot of the 'hoodies' in my area anyway are fine even if you say to them, they fail to remember that people have kids, I was'nt particularly considerate at 14 I have to say

Last weekend I had about 9 boys skateboarding up and down the street well the path off the car park right below DS's window so he woke up, this was about 2am. I went out and asked them if they could give it a rest as they had woken my DS up and he does'nt sleep as it is I also said I wouldnt mind it during the day or even early evening but that time of night is just taking the piss.

I got an apology from them which I was'nt looking for and they ahve'nt been back since although they were about last night but heard them saying not to board because it would wake folks up

If you want to remove a gang of teenagers, you open your windows and you play Cliff Richard, Val Doonican or anything by Vivaldi out of the window at full blast.

Thanks all - will be borrowing my mum's CD collection next time I go up to visit her then

The street improvements were street widening and creating shared zones - we live on a quiet street where it joins with another quiet street and the street improvements have effectively created a big square infront of our house - ideal for hoodies to meet up and have their little teenage gatherings on apparently. I was getting annoyed at the fact that the work meant I cant park anywhere near my house now (great with 2 small kids and a week's shopping to get in the house by yourself)... didnt realise there would be other side effects like making the street a teenagers drop in zone.

Mamadiva I did pop out at 11ish and ask them to keep the noise down as I have a 2 month old baby trying to sleep upstairs - didnt really have any effect at all. I think some other neighbours did call the police as they were out there when I popped out to ask the kids to keep the noise down.

Hecates Idea is brilliant! A bit of Daniel O'Donnell might sort them out . Or hold a Karaoke night, and all us Fab Febbers can come round and drone out some Patsy Cline

What about one of those anti-teenager high pitched alarm things that supermarkets use? Or are they illegal now?

pointydog · 03/05/2009 17:22

that's not good if you now have a pedestrianised square outside your house.

hmm. Have you a community council you could speak to and share solutions?

Contac council, def, and ask them what you should do.

Those sound alarms are awful. Wouldn't be surprised if they are illegal.
