to send a cleaner home if she's ill?

Our cleaner came in today, coughing and sneezing and looking really rough, so I sent her home. Partly out of sympathy and partly because I really don't want to catch anything. But her agency has now just called me saying I shouldn't tell their workers to go home, and its up to them to decide if someone can work. Sounds a bit bonkers to me - she was in my house and I could see how ill she was and they couldn't.

I don't think you were being unreasonabla at all. I would have done the same.

Baisey · 30/04/2009 14:00

Oh how ridiculous, you have every right to send her home if she was working in your house. I think ive heard it all now.

Numberfour · 30/04/2009 14:01

YANBU

why should you risk getting full of colds and coughs because some ogre won't let their sick staff stay at home?
for all they know you may have someone particularly vulnerable at home for whom a cold could be very serious.

the agency is out of line and I would complain, but then i am in a shit mood today.

Buda · 30/04/2009 14:02

I would call them back and remind them that YOU are the paying customer and YOU will decide if someone with an illness of any sort should be in your HOME.

Pinkjenny · 30/04/2009 14:05

YANBU - I was 'fired' from our cleaning agency (as a customer, not an employee) because I dared leave my cleaner a note requesting that she ensure the bathroom floor was cleaned properly (it wasn't aggressive, just a polite request). Upon seeing said note, she stormed out, apparently, and contacted the company in tears.

FGS - clean the bloody floor properly then, you lazy mare!!!!!

YANBU

Your house therefore up to you who you have in it.

I am sure the company were just worried about getting their fee.

thanks for reassuring me I'm not going mad! I'm not sure why she even told them, tbh. I would have paid anyway.

Its interesting beause there was a thread few weeks ago about the piano tutor who said he has to take 3 days off if he gets a cold and most posters said he was precious. It is always very triky with self employed people. Did you offer some money or an alternative day for her to work?

LaQuitar · 30/04/2009 14:55

oops sorry Just read that you are going to pay

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/04/2009 17:19

yanbu

course you dont want a someone with heavy cold in your house - you will all come down with it

screamingabdab · 30/04/2009 18:04

YANBU - did you pay her?

oranges · 30/04/2009 18:24

I pay the agency, and always pay or reschedule if she can't make it for whatever reason. They didnt even ask about that.

tell the agency you thouhgt the cleaner had "swine flu" and couldn't take the risk of her contaminating your house

junglist1 · 30/04/2009 19:49

YANBU at all! You're paying to get your house cleaned, not to be infected with germs!! What's wrong with this agency?

blossomsmine · 01/05/2009 23:42

YANBU, but she would have to tell the Agency. When i worked for an Agency we had a call each day to ask her how each job went....she could have lied but that wouldn't have been right!
