i was in tesco on the 20/04/09 and bought a pack of four baby mousses my son ate one in the car pack and when i got home discovered that they were expiring that day i bought them at full price of £1.68 i could not go back and knew that the next day they would be kaput.i went back today with the rest and and and the receipt i had spent £136, that day i was told that it was exceptable for them to sell a product that was expiring on that day and that i was the mug for choosing to buy it, i am fumming because shopping with a toddler is not fun and i feel they should swap it with even a banana to show good faith. i walked out and wish never to shop there and contribute to their profits.

Thats your prerogative. PLenty of others would.

Def not being unreasonable!
Same happened to me last week with an 18 pack of little star fromage frais.
Usually very good at checking dates as have found Tesco's to be slack on these before but my Mum picked them up for me and I didn't realise til the next day when I went to use them that they went out of date that day!
Paid full price and def could not get through 18 of them in one go!

Lost receipt so didn't expect a refund or replacement but thought i would mention it to customer services as a courtesy to others and because I have seen them nearly out of date before and was told I should be more vigilent and couldn't expect them to check the dates all the time and that it was my responsibility. ( Just love those customer service people who are so helpful and concerned!)
I know I will be checking dates on everthing from now on as I can't trust Tescos!

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I think most of what you are all getting upset about is that you aren't getting your money back on these overpriced pots of additives and sugar that are marketed at children. And if you don't believe me check the labels. That muller little stars one makes me laugh 'only 7 ingredients' er, what else do you need in fruit yoghurt but yoghurt and fruit? what are the other 5 unecessary things?

We never even buy those. One big pot of some nice plain greek yoghurt mixed with fruit or raisins does for all of us and doesn't last long enough to go off.

Twinklemegan · 29/04/2009 23:30

It takes me forever to do a shop in Tesco - you have to be so so vigilent because they're trying to rip you off at every opportunity. Some things are so counterintuitive.

Like charging proportionately more in some cases for large packs than for small ones, and then mixing up the way they break down the price so you need to do that extra calculation to compare like with like.

Or 2 for 1/3 for 2 offers that are deliberately designed to confuse and try to make you select things that aren't on offer.

Or changing the prices almost every week on certain products (not using special offers) so you have to check every single time which is the cheapest.

I hate Tesco but I have no other option. GRRRR.

onagar · 29/04/2009 23:51

If it was the sell by date YABU. If it was the eat by date YANBU.

Twinklemegan, don't ALL shops do that?

CandleQueen · 29/04/2009 23:55

Tesco's customer service is generally shite. and the stores around here often have out of date stock on the shelf.
Sanisburys on the the other hand are very generous with their best before dates.

ruddynorah · 30/04/2009 00:17

yabu you should have checked the date. for all they know you might be feeding lots of people that day with the food you bought. not their problem.

Twinklemegan · 30/04/2009 00:34

Onagar - Tesco is the absolute worst IMO. But then I don't shop very much other than for food. I haven't used another supermarket for ages but I never noticed it so much as I do at Tescos. Once I started noticing these things I'm spotting them more and more, and it is really starting to wind me up.

ILovePudding · 30/04/2009 00:42

YANBU to be a bit annoyed. But YABU to expect a refund. As others have said, they are not going to go off in an instant so you'd be able to eat them over the next couple of days.

Also, I've read a few articles lately about the amount of perfectly edible food, within it's useby date that gets chucked out and needlessly wasted by supermarkets. This is worse than selling food at it's sell by date IMO.

I had a similar situation to you with some mince. Was in the fridge at home for a couple of days and had gone off by the time I wanted to use it. Useby date was the day I'd bought it. Annoying, but not the supermarkets fault. (This was in Australia, so it's a global conspiracy to rip off customers )
