To think that this is appalling?

AIBU to think that this woman should be given a slap/threatened with legal action for child endangerment?

ThePhantomPlopper · 28/04/2009 13:32

There are a couple of other threads going on about this.

I don't think slapping would help anyone. Educating her might be helpful though.

Lillabet · 28/04/2009 13:35

The slap suggestion was a gut reaction. Education is, of course, always preferable but I wonder if education would have any effect on her at all

If I had triplets there's a chance that I wouldn't be spending all my time in the kitchen cooking them three meals a day.

Having said that, I probably wouldn't be feeding them McD's either.
But if she only goes out once a week to collect her benefits, how's she getting the McDonalds? I'd take this story with a very large pinch of salt...

FrankMustard · 28/04/2009 13:37

You read it in The Sun. Nuff said.

WinkyWinkola · 28/04/2009 13:39

Who cooks children three meals a day anyway? My DCs get the same thing e.g. fish pie for lunch and supper with a variation on the veg. Fish pie takes 40 mins to make.

JackBauerkillspigs · 28/04/2009 13:40

Why on earth woudl she contact the magazine, she must have known the result of the article would be horrific.

But am goggling at this bit
'I chew the food first so they can eat it because they haven?t got any teeth yet. '

KingRolo · 28/04/2009 13:44

Your reaction is exactly what the journos at The Sun want - shocked outrage of a 'this country's going to Hell in a handcart' variety.

It's quite likely too that sections of the article are complete bollocks.

Lillabet · 28/04/2009 13:50

FrankMustard - I never stated the source was 100% reliable!

I could always re-state my question as:
On the assumption that this story is correct, AIBU to that the woman should be given a slap/threatened with legal action for child endangerment?

I will concede that ThePhantomPlopper has a point that education is definitely preferable to a slap and that TheShipsCat also has a point that with triplets very few people are likely to spend all their time in the kitchen cooking them meals three times a day, however, the difference between baby food (pre-prepped or otherwise) and McDonald's is immense.

OP posts:
Lillabet · 28/04/2009 13:59

KingRolo - did I say this country is going to hell in a handcart? I did not, I merely asked if my personal reaction was unreasonable?

Frankly, it's up to mothers/fathers/parents how they feed/dress/bring up their children. I do not always agree with how they do it but I am sure that some people won't agree with how I bring up my LO. I am never likely to supply McDonald's as a nutritious meal, but I am sure there will be aspects of my parenting that some would disagree with.

Oh no Sun article.... my laptop doesnt like the Sun for some reason

Lillabet · 28/04/2009 14:12

oldraver your laptop obviously has a modicum of good taste .
The upshot of the article is: A 29-STONE mum has told how she gives her eight-month-old triplets McDonald?s junk food.

(Borrowed from the by-line of the story).

MadameCastafiore · 28/04/2009 14:15

I'll tell them big was beautiful when they are lying in their hospital bed having their joints replaced in their 20s because they are so obese that they have worn them away!

thisisyesterday · 28/04/2009 14:17

my fave bit was "i give my children vegetables on a sunday"

wow, go you!

stroppyknickers · 28/04/2009 14:21

suspect there is a massive imbalance here and much emphasis on macdonalds and less on the scrambled egg bit. lots of people use jars, and bumping up the benefits by adding universal child benefit is sneaky. sick of stories like this - education and welfare reform is the way forward not witch hunting.

sleeplessinstretford · 28/04/2009 14:22

i think she's a very very easy target.
if she only leaves the house once a week to get her dole then unless maccydees do a delivery service something is obviously not ringing true here...
She's feeding her babies what she eats (clearly) a slap is not in order, education is-she probably is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and thinks it's cute/funny that they are eating these things.
where the fucking fuck is her health visitor? I would also say that having worked in publishing for most of my career and having a lot of journo mates, they need an angle and misquotes/leading questions are a gogo if you work for a tabloid/the mail...

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 28/04/2009 14:24

some of that article is clearly bollocks, however she's clearly ignorant and in denial (thyroid???) and her kids will grow up overweight and very unhealthy so I'd hope she gets a clue sometime, but I doubt it will happen.
YANBU really.

stroppyknickers · 28/04/2009 14:24

health visitors tail off after a few weeks - then you go to clinic so they are obviously not worried anough to make an effort based on the initial visits.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 28/04/2009 14:24

"the difference between baby food (pre-prepped or otherwise) and McDonald's is immense."

yes McD tastes nicer, I mean have you tasted some of that baby food in a jar it really really mings.

solidgoldSneezeLikeApig · 28/04/2009 14:27

I really hope that the woman herself has made the bulk of the story up in order to get a nice cheque off the gullible fuckwits at the Sun (had a mate who used to do that...)

goodnightmoon · 28/04/2009 14:28

i agree - i think she's gotten the short end of the stick.

She says she feeds her babies jars, scrambled eggs, toast, etc. - all normal stuff - and then "a few bits of takeaways."

It is not uncommon for parents to share their food with babies at this age. I'm not saying they should be guzzling down MacDonalds and chips, but it doesn't sound like she's force feeding them Big Macs either.

sleeplessinstretford · 28/04/2009 14:30

i think it unlikely that she's made a fucking penny myself shaggers-(you are shagging bunny aren't you?)the gullible fuckwit here appears to be the mother, someone somewhere will have made a bit from it (specially as it's already being syndicated)

goodnightmoon · 28/04/2009 14:31

LBoF, i would take baby jars over McD's anyday. No salt, sugar, etc., just organic vegetables, a bit of cheese or meat and pasta or rice.

Nothing so awful.

sleeplessinstretford · 28/04/2009 14:36

jesus-deep friend e numbers for me please...
i have well educated friends who are on their 2nd baby-are both slim and healthy, yet feed their children exclusively on jars. I can't really believe it but they do.Surestart in our area run courses on how to feed your family well and cheaply-however these are usually full of middle class mums wanting to take advantage of the creche...
One of my fave homestart families was the one who didn't know how to cook/meal plan/budget-she used to get well excited about a trip to the greengrocer FFS texting to say 'i've bought an asparagus for us to cook on whatever day' not a fucking clue.I guess you should see what she grew up with (and to get to 29stone would take some prolonged poor diet)and then judge her a bit more fairly on that.

Lillabet · 28/04/2009 14:39

As far as I can tell her story ran in Closer magazine and The Sun then picked it up and ran with it. It is therefore quite likely she got paid something for it!

Whether she feeds them much takeaway or not she is feeding them nearly twice their daily requirement of calories!!!

"i have well educated friends who are on their 2nd baby-are both slim and healthy, yet feed their children exclusively on jars. I can't really believe it but they do"

Maybe they don't have much time? I have to admit, dd2 has had quite a lot of jars in her diet. Is it really so bad?
