to leave my desk in an unusable state to stop someone else using it on my day off?

i share a very small office with 5 other people but there are only 5 desks. On my day off someone else will use my desk but i hate it. I have to put away anything i'm working on, tidy it up and leave it completely clear. Part of my angst is a control thing, i don't want to share, its my desk and the only reason for someone has to is because they have taken on too many people. Our office should officially only have 2/3 people in anyway.

Your desk?

katz · 28/04/2009 13:31

the sharing thing is new - it has always just been my desk and has been my desk for 5 years, ITS MINE!

southeastastra · 28/04/2009 13:31

blimey you sound like the bloke i used to hot desk with.

he put small figurines of action figures all over it .

Iklboo · 28/04/2009 13:31

We have a clear desk policy at work where all our stuff we're working on has to be put away (mainly because of confidentiality & Data Protection).
I don't mind people using my desk but it really irritates me when they adjust my chair settings - why can't they just wheel their own bloody chair over if they want to use my computer? It takes me ages to get it sorted back again

AnyFucker · 28/04/2009 13:33

yabu, and selfish

ever heard of the concept of hot-desking?

if your office is too small, then speak to your managers

I bet your colleagues just love you...

ajandjjmum · 28/04/2009 13:33

Of course, some employers are using hot desking to reduce their costs, so that they stay in business and we get to keep our jobs.

Small sacrifice to make?

katz · 28/04/2009 13:33

but its my desk.........

Tinker · 28/04/2009 13:34

Oh tampering with your chair is unforgiveable (but, of course, they'll think it's their chair as well though) hate desk sharing offices.

Lulumama · 28/04/2009 13:34

YABU and petty

if you share an office and are not there, where do you suggest the other person sits? on the floor? how hard can it be to put your stuff in a drawer or under your desk or somewhere out of teh way??

Lulumama · 28/04/2009 13:35

it's yours for the days you are working there

nametaken · 28/04/2009 13:35

YABU - it's not your desk at all, whatever gave you that idea.

It's the place where you sit when you're working. And when you're not working, someone else can sit there and work.

pigleto · 28/04/2009 13:35

Its a bit passive aggressive isn't it? Don't you want the new person to feel welcome at all? Please have a bit of empathy.

katz · 28/04/2009 13:35

hey - i only moan on here, i actually leave my desk in a beautiful state, clear and ready to go, which is why the she likes using my desk.

ThePhantomPlopper · 28/04/2009 13:36

Are you 3?

nametaken · 28/04/2009 13:37

Leave it all messy then. Put cake crumbs all over it and pick your nose and wipe the bogies on the underneath of the desk. She'll soon find somewhere else to sit.

Baffy · 28/04/2009 13:38

totally understand

but it is only yours on the days you work there like lulu says - if you left the company it wouldn't be yours to take would it...

frustrating, but yes, yabu

pooka · 28/04/2009 13:39

When I went back after having dd, I discovered that my desk had been reassigned and that because I was part-time I would thenceforth by hotdesking. Though I was the only one doing it

Hated it - had to sit at a spare desk in my manager's office (leaving when he had a meeting) and just felt that I had nowhere to put my files.

So I can see your point, but as the person never having a desk to call one's own, I also have almighty sympathy for the woman having to use your's when you're not there.

Really unfriendly to sabotage her being able to use the desk though.

katz · 28/04/2009 13:39

and its all part of a whole bigger picture, basically they have too many people and not enough desks and our office is too cramped as it is, i can't do my job properly on the days i am in. and i can say its not credit crunch related its a head in the sand problem. The powers at be have big offices to themselves and we have to share tiny ones which are unsuitable. I wouldn't mind some much if there were somewhere to actually store the work which used to sit on my desk but like i said my office is tiny.

I see your point. I dislike people using my desk when I am not there as they leave their rubbish on it, leave coffee stains on it, adjust the screen, the chair, don't empty my recycling box when they fill it up.

If they leave it as they find it, fine use away (although mine is always messy, but it is my mess! )

yabu to deliberately leave it messy so someone else does not use it though, it is horrible to hot-desk, leaves you feeling quite undervalued/not wanted. Could you not just have a word with the person who uses it and request they clear up after themselves and adjust the seats back if they change? Communication is key to a good working relationship with colleagues.

katz · 28/04/2009 13:40

i knew i was bu when i posted but was hoping for some good tips on how to cope or perhaps sabotage the desk!

katz · 28/04/2009 13:42

i do leave it beautifully tidy and make my fellow desk sharer very welcome, its just useful to be able to rant on here!

last time i went to work some bstrd had nicked my computer.

now i have to wander around like a lost soul (despite the door having my name on it ffs) trying to find a desk/ computer that is free (usually behind a door with someone else's name on it lol. i fear i may occasionally leave more than footprints as i am not the tidiest of employees....

but i have handed in my notice lol. maybe that's an option?

southeastastra · 28/04/2009 13:43

madwomanintheattic · 28/04/2009 13:44
