To not want my dd nursery manager to go on holiday to Mexico

My dd nursery manager is going on holiday to mexico the end of the week. I would not go at the moment but she is still going. She is the manager of a private nursery which takes children from 6 weeks to 4 years, i find it quite worrying especially as my dd has problems with her immune system. Is this just me being paranoid?

I don't think any sane person would want to go to Mexico at the moment.
They'll probably ban non essential trips like holidays so she might not be able to go anyway.

silkcushion · 27/04/2009 22:46

bbc news just said all schools across Mexico were shut today. Given that I'm sure travel advice will change before the end of the week and suggest no one should visit

lilacclaire · 27/04/2009 22:47

The advice is not to travel here

Twims · 27/04/2009 22:48

I don't think it has anything to do with you tbh.

Yurtgirl · 27/04/2009 22:48

An 'expert' on the radio today said everyone should cancel trips to mexico for now

If she does go she certainly shouldnt go anywhere near any other citizen anywhere until proven that she is ok - especially not a nursery!

MatNanPlus · 27/04/2009 22:49

On the news just now it seems that the borders will not be closed to travellers!!

Twims i think it has to do with me if my dd goes to the nursery and has a poor immune system. I realise that people look forward to their holidays but personal opinion i would not go, especially if i worked with children.

I don't blame you for being concerned

You are most definitely not being unreasonable. She should at the very least get herself checked out before she goes back to work.

JeanPoole · 01/05/2009 15:00

so did she go?

Jaypickle · 01/05/2009 15:29

BradfordMum · 01/05/2009 15:38

Why don't you find out how long flu would take to develop and keep your DD off nursery for that period after the person returns?

AFAIK the foreign office isn't banning travel, just advising against non-essential trips, so this woman's insurance wouldn't pay out and she'd lose the money.

That's her decision, wise or not, just as it's your decision whether or not to take a financial hit by losing out on childcare.

Northernlurker · 01/05/2009 16:03

Two things come to mind - firstly you can't stop her going on holiday - wherever you go in the world you may or may not bring something back with you. Secondly - I don't understand about why you are worried about your child's immune system in this case alone when it is generally safe for her to be in nursery?

mosschops30 · 01/05/2009 16:11

I think some holiday companies have cancelled trips to mexico (i know thomas cook have) so maybe she wont be able to travel anyway

Callisto · 01/05/2009 16:14

According to my travel agent friend, the agencies are offering full refund until 14 May (or some such date in the not too distant future) as the FO has advised against non-essential travel to Mexico.

SamsMama · 01/05/2009 16:14

Most daycares in America take LO's from 6 weeks too. Where ya from, Jaypickle? (Just asking out of curiousity.)

But as to the question at hand, I think I'd be worried. I'm not going to sit in my house with a gas mask on scrubbing my hands every three seconds or anything, but I'm a little paranoid. The only case of swine flu in Minnesota thus far is in a town only a few miles from me, and yes, I'm a bit worried. (I think I've read Stephen King's 'The Stand' a time or two too many!!!) But all I can do is make sure that we get enough rest, stay hydrated, and wash our hands.

However, someone going to Mexico...that's just a bit foolish at the moment, isn't it?

Nekabu · 01/05/2009 16:19

I know people who've just had their holiday cut short by their tour operator who has brought all of their customers home by the first available flight. Whilst they were in Mexico, none of the holiday makers were allowed to leave the hotel and services were in disarray as local staff are staying at home. Their employer will allow them back at work for 5 days either. YANBU and your dd's nursery manager is being inconsiderate and silly.

fishnet · 01/05/2009 16:21

I disagree with most. I would say that you will not be sending your child until she has had a medical check up. I would probably take it higher and also refuse to pay whilst I couldn't send my child. However I am a bit bolshy at times and I am one of those taking this quite seriously and have actually paid my £11 to reserve tamiflu. I know that the majority of MNers think this is foolish but I'd rather pay £11 than be loking back in six months time wishing I'd done it.

mosschops30 · 01/05/2009 16:22

fishnet, info please

fandango75 · 01/05/2009 16:42

the foreign office advice is dont travel to mexico - this should be enough to claim back costs on medical insurance apparently

is she nuts by the way??

mosschops30 · 01/05/2009 16:50

I want to know where I can reserve tamiflu from ????
