DS1 is quiet and has just few good friends - one of these Mums is a good friend of mine also, but this week I realised that DS1 has not been invited to his birthday party.

I feel really upset about this - I know it is sooo trivial in the scheme of things, but i can't help feeling hurt for DS1 - (he isn't even aware of this by the way)

I suppose i worry about DS1 not having many mates ...?

I would def ask "whats so and so doing for his birthday?"

Thanks for your posts - I feel less and just posting this and hearing OP's points of views

But I must admit that when I next see DS1's friends Mum for a coffee I will make a point of asking (casually) what her DS is doing for his Birthday?

agree with other posters, i always imposed a really strict limit on numbers and left them to it. they may decide to invite a "popular" child at the cost of a child i preferred but i figure it is a good life lesson. I always maintained a really strict "no whinging" policy re not being invited to others parties, reminding them how hard they found it to choose 5, or 8 or however many. This makes me sound really hard, but when you have 3 daughters, the whole business of friends and parties is hard. Any gyp from parents resulted in the "x made the decision who to invite, its always hard with limited numbers, don't you find?"

I know how you feel josben. My DD was not invited to a party recently that her 2 best friends were invited to. She really was not bothered about it but I was gutted and worried about it for weeks! I made the day of the party special for her(and me!!) by taking her and another excluded friend to her favourite soft play.
