It would be scary to go it alone - the risk would be all yours but so would the cash at the end of the day.
Public sector work is quite secure ( though cuts, they are a commin') but not well paid.
It's a hard choice to make.
Both DH and I are self emplyed - we have, over the years had some 'wowzer' moments 9 house on the line of course) but on the whole we have been very happy being masters of our own destinies and in recent times have mad a lot of money.

Oblomov · 24/04/2009 12:12

agree, most accountants don't earn that much. 60k + , yes, but very few earn 150k.

EyeballsintheSky · 24/04/2009 12:17

In the words of Le Comte de Frou Frou (Blackadder), I would like someone else to earn the money and then give it to me

Buy some zinc and coat it with 18ct gold. Shape it into a Gold Bullion Bar and sell it.

Just make sure you never see the purchaser again.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/04/2009 12:23

Have you thought of selling your soul to the devil? I bet he would love to have the soul of a child protection worker to add to his collection - he already has so many lawyers, bankers, politicians etc.

mayorquimby · 24/04/2009 12:25

you'd be ,much better off earning 149,999

I've been thinking about that Riven...and for me it would depend how much extra you'd need to work.
For me, once I've written my books and done the PR it's all the same whether I make £1.50, £150,000 or 200k. Okay, I'll have to pay more tax on that last bit but the effort remains the same.
But, for example, a lawyer might have to work and extra however long a day and they might not consider it worth it if 60% goes in tax. They might think 'I'm already on a good enough crack, forget it.'

Litchick · 24/04/2009 14:10

Some lawyers I know have been offered the option to go to four days a week...if your now facing 60% tax you might decide to take the free day.
Because in real terms you're still going to be loaded, you'll now have time you never had, and the only thing that will really suffer in the tax revenue and thus public services.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/04/2009 14:14

I'd like to raise the bar and find a job where I could earn £149,999 a year but only work 3 days a week and not have to travel away from home.

Any ideas?

Litchick · 24/04/2009 14:19

Well as a high class hooker you really would have to put the hours in

lalalonglegs · 24/04/2009 14:34

Would you be able to "mislay" some of the children in your care and ebay them?

Morloth · 24/04/2009 14:39

DH is in IT and while isn't quite there yet it is possible one day. Murex consulting?

onagar · 24/04/2009 14:44

It doesnt really work out does it. In order to cost the goverment some revenue these hypothetical lawyers still have to give up a lot of money themselves

trixymalixy · 24/04/2009 14:52

The majority of actuaries and accountants don't earn anything like £150k!!!

kentmumtj · 24/04/2009 20:51

im quite liking the idea of bank robbery or coating zinc in gold they sound like lots of fun lol

if only i could think of the perfect crime that i could get away with and not feel guilty

I'd quite like to work three days a week, 9.15am-2.45pm, and earn £149.99. What does the panel recommend? I've ruled out selling my soul to the devil due to ethical concerns. I've had too much surgery and got too many scars to make it as a high class hooker.

goodnightmoon · 24/04/2009 22:34

150 quid for three mornings? nanny.

ThingOne · 25/04/2009 14:45

Oops, meant to say £149,999. I'm not going to make it with that kind of slip up, am I .

TippytheTipsyTurkeychick · 25/04/2009 15:01

I'd like the moon on a stick and a rainbow pony. Any ideas?
