OK, so it does sound really really daft but i've been looking on GLTC website and came across the most beautiful wooden kitchen and dolls house. Have tallied it up and with my special 10% mumsnet discount it'd be £250ish inc delivery for both... They would be their main xmas presents and they wont get much else other than clothing.

Said to DH that i think we should get them as they may stop selling them when they change the stock etc before xmas, and we have the money to be able to pay for it but he's kicking off saying he'd rather wait to buy them till after our holiday in october!!!

We have 3 DC's to buy for this xmas and i doubt i'd have enough time to sort them all out xmas-wise between oct and december aswell as shopping for our large family's aswell.

As for our holiday the balance is paid and all we need to pay out now is our spending money and passposts for me and the DC's, i have the money saved for passports and will be paying for them in about 2 weeks, and then we have another 5 months pay before our holidays in which we can save £400p/m for our spending money which is more than enough...

DH is now saying 'oh just buy it and if we have a crap time its all your fault!!'..... yet he didn't complain when spending load son a new car last week or on a wii and all the accessories 2 months ago..... argh!!!!

so.... AIBU to buy them??

sign up for their birthday club, you get 20% discount.
can you link to the things you want, i am an elc catalogue expert will tell you if its stuff they sell every year or not.

edam · 24/04/2009 10:11

No, YANBU.

nancy75 · 24/04/2009 10:12

ssorry ignore it all, i've got the wrong shop!
but i have bought and sent back 4 dolls houses from glt so link anyway!

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 24/04/2009 10:12

sounds like there have been quite a lot of demands on your money.

Surely you have all you need with the wii and stuff? Can you honestly afford £250 on a kitchen and play house. Things could change (someone could lose their job) between now and christmas.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 24/04/2009 10:12

YANBU and buying them now will still give you time to budget for holiday extras.

glaskham · 24/04/2009 10:15

Nancy75- they are from Great Little Trading Co...

tried linking them on one of my chat thread last night but they didn't work, will try though, they are pretty kitchen and georgia dolls house

LFC- surely buying the DC's main presents now while we know we have more than enough money then makes sence in case DH lost his job?? Plus, DH is in a pretty secure job (not been affected by the resecion and having record years since bussiness started 20yrs ago etc)

I'll find you a 15% one hang one

Sorrento · 24/04/2009 10:27

EM010B works until sunday, the only thing I would say is that they did a 20% off code around Christmas last year, probably because they'd over ordered, so maybe this year they'll be better prepared, most shops were caught out last year.

Personally I would wait, they are always bringing out bigger and better toys/ideas and the children change themselves in 6 months.

gagamama · 24/04/2009 10:27

I totally empathise with the 'oh, but they have to have it' feeling, and I know it's difficult to get your head into gear when your heart is so set on something. But practically speaking, buying presents so far in advance isn't really a great idea, especially if you're no better off now than you would be before Christmas. Firstly, it eats into the warranty and/or exchange period. I guess with wooden items it's not such a problem, but I know people who have bought Christmas presents cheaply in the sales, only to find out after Chrismas that they're faulty and out of warranty. Also, what if your DCs set their hearts on something else... and it might be something more affordable?

Your DH is BVU to suggest that it will be your fault if the holiday isn't great if you do buy them though.

glaskham · 24/04/2009 10:44

Thanks Sorrento- an extra 5% off may swing it in my favour!! haha!!

Gagamama- The warranty thing does bother me a little but i was goign to get DH to build them up ready for xmas day anyway, so he could always open up the boxes and check all the parts to fix it together are there before we stash it away under our bed for xmas... and to be honest we've never been the sort of people to use a warranty, everythign has always broken just outside of a warranty, or we loose the reciept or something... just our luck!! haha!!

also- DD2 will only be coming up to 12mths at xmas so the plan is for her to have the kitchen as she'll be able to use it within the year after getting it... she wont be old enough to set her heart on anything at that age- so mummy can do it for her ... and DD1 will be coming up for 4yo, she's very much a girly girl so i expect she'll love it, and my parents and DH's parents always ask us if they've asked for anythign that we haven't got them so if they did set their heart on something else then i'm sure we could work somethign out...

To be fair Verburdat took back a desk I had stored for 18 months and then opened the box o discover it was broken, so maybe that's not a huge concern, if of course GLTC are still going, letterbox have gone haven't they

branflake81 · 24/04/2009 12:23

I think if you can't afford them or will be struggling to do so then don't buy it.

handbagqueen · 24/04/2009 12:29

I would suggest if you buy them and they are flat packed you assemble them to check they are okay. I bought DD's a dollhouse for christmas left it in the box until christmas eve - only to find it was damaged when we built in on christmas eve, luckily we managed to get it together with a bit of tank tape and then after christmas managed to swap it for a new one.

glaskham · 24/04/2009 18:30

HBQ- thats what i intended to do, get DH to put them up when they arrive to check its all there and nothings broken.

Bran- we definatley wont be struggling, i've worked out that with our 'extra money' each month that we'll be saving we are able to save double what we need for our spends and anything else for our holiday!!

I just dont understand why DH thinks we'll get to our holiday with no money when we've been saving since jan and have managed to pay off the whole holiday and save enough to be able to buy the new car aswell, and the wii.... he's happy to spend the money on things that will benefit him but when it comes to me wanting to get something nice for the girls and put it away for xmas he's being funny... And he's not normally like that at all, he'll normally aplaude me for my forward thinking and organisation!!

I think as long as you've got some stashed aside for emergencies eg. new boiler as happened to us this week, despite being insured with British Gas on our 5 year old other one, then I would go ahead and get them now as it sounds as if you have the holiday well covered.
