cant be given to under 16s? even though they sell it with a baby teether toy attached? might need to cahnge their marketing then

KingCanuteIAm · 23/04/2009 20:33

Really? Why is that?

In any case, if they followed the guidelines correctly when you bought them I doubt they will entertain you TBH!

Bonjela teething gel is ok for children.

todays news

blinks · 23/04/2009 20:37

it's the adult version isn't to to be used for kids.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 23/04/2009 20:40

Didn't realise they had aspirin (derivatives) in.
Knowing that though - makes total sense as aspirin is very readily absorbed by mucous membranes in the mouth (esp. under tongue) - better than in the stomach in fact.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 23/04/2009 20:40

that's the ulcer stuff, not the teething gel though, isn't it?

Bonjela TEETHING GEL is safe for children. They now think the ulcer stuff is not.

OP - is it the teething gel or ulcer soothing gel you've got?

self · 23/04/2009 20:43

my sister who studied chemical engineering had warned me before about bonjela and had said its better to give the child a chicken bone under supervision i just don't want to put my trust in these companies anymore-well since son is teething wont be any sleep tonight then.

Absolutely Hecate....the "Bonjela teething gel" is still safe.

But previously the "Bonjela" and "Bonjela cool" were also suitable for teething too.

self · 23/04/2009 20:45

i have the cool and the teething gel,
a month ago it was cough mixture

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 23/04/2009 20:49

Sell it on ebay.ie
It's still OK to use it in Ireland or so our medical bods say!

cory · 23/04/2009 20:59

but if you buy it with teething toy attached, sure it is the teething gel you are buying? and that is still safe for babies. It's the adult stuff for mouth ulcers that is thought to carry a risk of Reyes syndrome.

And speaking as someone with experience, I would rather buy up the contents of the pharmacy than have another case of Reyes in the house.

Dp just told me he read this in the paper today. I use dentinox teething gel on ds as I found it worked better than bonjela, and doesn't the label on bonjela say leave a 20 minute gap between applications and dentinox doesn't. I'm assuming all teething gels have the same ingredients though, will have to look. Will also have to read the links as I don't read/buy newspapers anymore.

Sassybeast · 23/04/2009 21:16

Give a child a chicken bone ? They learn that in chemical engineering ? Right

SlightlyMadStirrup · 23/04/2009 21:20

Just had a look and Dentinox appears to be lidocaine not aspirin derivatives.

Bonjela seem to have responded very well though - and have updated their website with very clear information on the front page etc.

They have also updated their FAQ pages with the following:

Q. Can bonjela gel or bonjela Cool be given to children under 16 years old?
A. NO. bonjela gel and bonjela cool are not recommended for children under 16 years old. Click here for further information on important changes to the bonjela Range.

BUT they seem to have forgotten to update the FAQs further down which say:

Q. I have heard that bonjela gel contains aspirin. Is this correct?
A. No, bonjela gel contains choline salicylate and although both choline salicylate and aspirin are derivatives of salicylic acid, they are distinct chemical entities with different properties. Choline salicylate is not aspirin and is not associated with Reye's syndrome so the warnings on aspirin use in children do not apply to bonjela gel.

Thanks SMS, I have just had a look at my dentinox gel too.
