i am sick and tired that some parents dont check their children regularly for headlice. No sooner has ds got rid of them and he gets them again! i check him regularly and do everything a parent should so why can't everyone do it. ds has hem agin which is about the fourth time this school year! aaghhhhhhhhhh

I don't think you ever get all the nits, but if you nitty-gritty-comb with conditioner every day for about a week you will be getting them as soon as they hatch and with any luck, before they breed.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 24/04/2009 22:44

I think I've got all of ds's out. I check it every day, they really stand out on his hair and have not found any today. My neighbour recommended a shampoo called chinese whispers which makes the hair too silky so the lice fall out (apparantly). Do you know anything about it?

lunamoon2 · 24/04/2009 23:03

Fluffybunny- a good friend of mine works at a private school and believe me, they do get nits!! Nits apparently do not discriminate between the hair of privately educated kids and that of the rest of the population!

Ps Everyone should regularly wet comb their child's hair with a nit comb (it helps if it has conditioner on).

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 24/04/2009 23:50

I had 4 years of good luck and it's come back to bite me in the bum then.

nappyaddict · 25/04/2009 00:05

chinese whispers

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 00:06

Thankyou.

nappyaddict · 25/04/2009 00:07

Does anyone know if Superdrug sell nit combs?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 00:09

Probably. You can get them at your local pharmacy.

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 00:20

only had the little buggers once in my family since I had children - and they were on me!

DS1 was 6 months old, I had no contact with any other children (apart from tiny babies) - I went to the hairdresser to have my haircut

.............and nearly died of shame when she told me I was infested

Still to this day I wonder where the hell they came from!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 00:26

poor you! maybe she had them on the comb already

FAQinglovely · 25/04/2009 00:28

that must be it

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 00:30

I agree. There's no way it could have been you. It's the only logical option left.

LastOrders · 25/04/2009 00:37

Put a few drops of tea tree oil into DCs shampoo bottle and give it a good shake to mix.

It keeps the cretins at bay (most of the time!!)

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 00:39

I brought some tea tree shampoo for him from wilco's. He has sensitive skin though so I need to be careful what he's using.

pipholder · 25/04/2009 12:01

I AM a Nitty Nora!!I am hired by certain schools through a nursing agency each term to do head inspections. And yes it is usually the same people reoffending, a letter gets sent out asking parents to treat the child before they come back to school. Schools can still arrange this - it's just that Gov't funding was removed so schools have to pay for it out of their own budgets now

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 19:27

Please come to ds's school. I think you do a wonderful job.

funtimewincies · 25/04/2009 19:50

I'm afraid that I'm not quoting urban myths MrsFreud, nor am I dumbing down, simply commenting from personal experience after many years teching in primary schools.

We can send a standard letter home to the whole class saying that nits are doing the rounds again, please check your child, etc. and the usual parents check and the usual ones don't. Again in my experience (not what I heard at the school gates), these letters have very little effect. What I meant was that a teacher is in sticky territory if he/she directly tells a parent that they think their child has lice. Some are grateful (if embarrassed) and some are downright aggressive.

School nurses can be booked for talks on teeth, puberty, general hygiene, etc. but I have yet to meet one who is in school on a regular basis. Nice to (virtually) meet you pipholder !

funtimewincies · 25/04/2009 19:51

'teaching' even

HumphreyCobbler · 25/04/2009 19:54

Phoning parents up often does no good anyway.

People say they will treat it and don't. Or don't repeat the treatment.

If they don't care they don't care.

ChasingSquirrels · 25/04/2009 20:04

my mum was saying the other day that she used to catch them and stick them on sellotape - then when the parent denied their child had them she used to show them the evidence. She did retire about 6 years ago though!

Anyone else scratching??

funtimewincies · 25/04/2009 20:08

Ahh, I can just see the press headlines and subsequent General Teaching Council enquiry now if I tried that !

Off to give my hair a good comb too...

Morloth · 25/04/2009 20:10

Shave his head. That's what we did - solved the problem nicely. Sure he looks like a thug but he doesn't have nits and I don't have to bother with his hair anymore.

Morloth · 25/04/2009 20:11

Sorry - just to clarify when I say shave I mean a number 2/3 all over not actually shaving it so he is bald!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 25/04/2009 21:56

Sorry but I refuse to shave my son's head because some other parent can't give a shite about their own child. I once cared for a child who's head was so infested she had infections all over her head. It was horrible, I really felt for the poor thing. People who say head lice are not a problem and leave them should think about children like this who end up in hospital!

Eve4Walle · 26/04/2009 16:34

DDs school send letters pleading with parents to check their kids hair every other week. Of course, I do check her hair, only takes a few moments doesn't it?

BTW, nitty Gritty combs are available via prescription so we got ours for nothing (not sure if this has already been said?)

Print this out and take it to your doctor and that's all you have to do. I find it is the best thing for getting rid of the little buggers: www.nittygritty.co.uk/site/howtogetaprescription.asp
