i used to think doesn't matter how much the clothes cost or where they are from, makes no difference.

with dd i normally get her clothes from tescos, matalan and next.

shes got one or two bits from boden and monsoon.

everytime she wears the boden and monsoon stuff everyone says how lovely she looks and asks where i got her outfit from etc.

im amazed people really pay much attention to what shes wearing.

but now its making me think, should i get her nicer stuff more often
?

I buy Mini Boden clothes in the sale for the next year. Then buy a few sets of plain tops in assorted colours from cheaper shops to go with the boden stuff. My daughter gets a couple of years of wear out of the clothes and I sell them on Ebay recouping some of the money to buy more clothes. Must go and see how my auction is going!

I agree about the cheap clothes being horribly twee and pinktastic.

Mostly dd lives in handmedowns - she also 'exudes inner scruff' (thankyou Morlock!) and is covered in hay & mud, so generally I settle for seasonally appropriate and not actively smelly.

But for coats, party frock etc I buy 2nd hand nice stuff from ebay.

I think as far as kids clothes go ,cheap stuff- George,Matalan etc is very tacky and a bit chavvy
However when it comes to adults clothes I actually think Matalan are quite good.I know in tests ( of Ladies clothes)a where labels were removed from garments , Customers perceived Matalan to be of a higher quality , better style than many 'quality' brands.

Most of the supermarkets seem to channel Boden as far as I can see (lots of stripes and brights)... Dd has a gorgeous butterfly top from Tesco (from my sis- I tend to buy ebay) which looks v Boden.

boden stuff very thin and doesn't wash well imo...despite lovely designs.

I find Boden stuff washes soo much better than George or M&S (for example) especially the tights which don't shrink, the tights are Fab

Now that ds is of an age where he can wear clothes for a year or more, before growing out of them, then I don't begrudge paying more but really my no. 1 criteria is he doesn't look like a mini-hoodlum nor is he sloganised with 'here comes trouble' - which has ruled out a fair swathe of stock at Tesco & Next etc.

Boden, MN's marmite brand, is hit & miss - to my chagrin their ££ cords wear out at the knees faster than Asda/Sainsbury £5 ones but their boys' tops so far have lasted brilliantly.

Boots' Mini Mode for both boys & girls is lovely, Gap & Pumpkinpatch are very good too.

Do United Colours of Benetton still exist in the UK? Friend's dd from abroad is often dressed in their clothes and looks gorgeous.

I find Sainsburys not bad in terms of supermarket clothes for children when it comes to wear. Have given up on Tesco though, everything looks like shit after one wash.

Luckily, my DDs are bean poles. It's easy for stuff to look good when you're tall and skinny.

But because DD1 has legs like a giraffe and is straight up and down like a pencil, Gap are the only jeans that fit her.

Even other brands with adjustable waists are made for fatter kids and the waist doesn't adjust enough.

But I get the jeans on sale in the US for much cheaper because she grows out of things very quickly.

I think you need a few nice things, but the rest doesn't matter as long as it can get dirty, is hard wearing and washes well. There is nothing sadder than a DC not being able to roll around in the grass/ sand or get covered in paint etc because 'mummy doesn't want me to get my clothes dirty'.
