Is Simpsons a kids program or what?

We were all sat watching the simpsons earlier and there was a bloke dressed in bandages and a reference was made to him never being allowed to have a "boner", you then hear a rip and the bloke looks down ... a hint that his willy has ripped through the bandages.

There was a similar 'gag' a few days ago. I'm starting to feel uncomfortable with the kids watching it but it's on at 6pm! I really don't think it should be!

It's for older kids/adults. I don't like my 10 year old watching it. The content's too much for him.

TrillianAstra · 20/04/2009 00:00

No, it's not a kids' program.

It is supposed to be suitable for family viewing, and actually be entertaining for adults too, not just aimed at children. I'd put it at a PG.

Thunderduck · 20/04/2009 00:00

No. I think it's intended for teenagers and adults.

RockinSockBunnies · 20/04/2009 00:02

I think the point of the Simpsons is that it has so many levels to it - children grasp the basic plot and amusing bits, adults appreciate the witty hidden content and inuendo!

Having said that, I've not watched it for a few years, so maybe the content's changed a bit!

KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 00:04

So you are worried about the slight hint of sexual reference? What about the fact that every week you get to watch a cat chop a mouse into a million gory bits? I would have thought that far more disturbing to a child than a veiled sexual reference. (Which sounds like a very mild one for The Simpsons). No, it is not a childrens cartoon. The fact it is animated does not make it for kids!

my DD1 loves this, but I had to turn it off yesterday as it was all about marge and homer trying to spice up their sex life!! I do let her watch it, but we watch together, and if its a "naughty" one we turn off.

Clary · 20/04/2009 00:05

My kids really like it but I agree Higory, sometimes there are bits I am decidedly uneasy about.

I think it has maybe got worse over the years?

Perhaps it goes over their heads tho

It is on at 6pm after all which suggests it's generally suitable, but then so is Friends which includes bits about sex and babies and virgins etc.

FAQinglovely · 20/04/2009 00:05

well it depends if you view the line of (something like - I didn't actually watch it)

"praise the lord for ample penis" - to be suitable for younger viewers or not

Apparently BF's DH nearly crashed the car on the way to a hospital appointment in Oxford on Thursday after hearing that one ring out from the in-car DVD player they'd bought to take their youngest DD's mind off her hospital visit.

cat and mouse thing is fine. It's just liek Tomand Jerry which I watched as a child and I'm no axe murderer

harleyd · 20/04/2009 00:07

itchy and scratchy rock

SparklingSarah · 20/04/2009 00:10

so instantly your kids think sex is bad?

if they say nothing then say nothing also!

if they say oh what's a boner and they know a bit about sex - answer them - it's slang for an erection - that happens suddenly from time to time!
if they aren't old enough smile and say it's a boy thing and leave it!

CHRIST!! what are you all SO afraid of?

no the SImpsons is not a kids programme but my 7 year old watches it barely notices any "naughtiness" and if she asks I answer

KingCanuteIAm · 20/04/2009 00:13

No, it is not like Tom and Jerry but yes they are the cartoon they are based on. The difference is that Tom was trying to eat Jerry and Jerry did various comic things to stop him. Itchy (I think is the mouse) does various, horrifically violent, things to Scratchy without any provocation at all. All of the scenes begin with Scratchy meandering down the street/reading a paper etc.

I can see how the basis works but it is not the same.

In any case, my children watch it (including the naughty ones) and I have seen no signs of axe action yet. However, for anyone who has watched more than one or two episodes to still be surprised to find bits that are questionable for children seems a bit
