Are all 12 year old girls so dramatic and OTT?

DSD is driving me mad lately. I've not lived with them long but the dramatics are really starting to piss me off already. Everything is such a huge deal, everything is such an episode/drama.

Like one example ... a few days ago she came running into the house screaming. When she got into the living room she threw her mobile phone across the room onto the sofa and started jumping up and down making lots of noise. My first thought was that someone had sent her an indecent pic or a rude text .. I was really concerned and asked her what was wrong. She pointed at the phone and was shouting "eewwww!!! oh my god!!!" etc

Eventually she said "it's wet!! it had some water on it!!" ffs it had a few drops of water on it and she's throwing it around and screaming

This morning she went swimming. Came home and her hair was all frizzy. So begins WW3, doors slammed, screaming and shouting, brush being thrown, feet being stamped ... all the while her dad is pandering to her and trying to calm her down by offering to straighten it for her.

I just get so wound up by it. I have children but boys and have never had to put up with such ridiculous behaviour.

Another example from an hour ago:

"[SCREAM!!!!] OH MY GOD!!! DAD QUICK!!! OH MY GOD!!!" (door get slammed, she comes running downstairs, living room door flies open, brush comes flying across the room, she stands there panting at the door, mouth wide open) "OH ... MY .... GOD ... !"

DP - "What? what's happened??"

DSD - "OH MY GOD, you will just NOT believe what I have just seen!"

By this point I switch off mentally and go to make a drink.

DP - "what???"

DSD - "The cat ... was only ... cuddling up to my elephant teddy!!! I was like 'OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? and she was like 'what?' and it was just SO CUTE!"

ffs... I'm sure it might sound funny to some but when cups of coffee are getting knocked over during an episode and things are getting broken it gets tiresome really quickly.

AIBU?

I do tend to ignore it but this morning for instance she knocked the same cup of coffee 3 times.

At tea time there was one extra yorkshire pudding and when DP asked who wanted it she screamed at the top of her voice, darted across the kitchen and slammed into him knocking him into the oven (good job there were no pans on the hob) and then as she came running back to the table, showing off with this yorkshire pud, she knocked over a glass of orange juice and then screamed that it went on her shoe. (cue, shoe going flying across the garden)

I really have to restrain myself sometimes. It's so fecking stupid and pointless.

Yes sounds 'normal' for that age to me.

they are like so you know like all over the show-i only pull mine if she's being an utter dick/if i've had enough of her for that particular day. recently she announced her dinner was 'ew like disgusting' so i just ditched it in the bin without comment (she's 14 and a half) sometimes they need boundaries setting, big time, and quite like them. if mine is being foul i don't make an issue as i can't stand the histrionics of it all-she's had change (personally/hormonally) and now lives with my (reasonably new) partner and our baby-i kind of like you know try to treat is a being like a you know toddler.
if you can do get dp to speak to her about the impact her behaviour is having on all of you.i find the phrase 'over tired' and sending to lie down seems to work...

silkcushion · 19/04/2009 23:08

yes - in my limited experience they are.

no they are not. It does sound that she likes seeking attention.

sleeplessinstretford · 19/04/2009 23:38

der- of course she is pointy- her daddys got a new woman, she's hormonal, her lifes turned upside down and that's before you add the 'too much chest growth/not enough chest growth.does he fancy me/does he not' etc etc stuff that we can't even begin to know about...have a heart...they are like giant toddlers (need sleep and feed but think they can get by on their own guidance) dead clumsy and all over the place in every way. mine drives me insane but she's funny and is no different to any other

der - yeah, my point was she is definitely seeking attention, she is not necessarily a melodramatic pain in the butt just because she is 12.
