Thinking nail varnish on toddlers is horrid

BodyBagEgg · 18/04/2009 23:57

yes someone I know paints her toddlers toenails.
not the fingers bit the toes.
the child is about 2 years old.

why on earth would someone think it's a good idea?

I like it for a whole look

As long as it matches her earrings...I'd say fine

CompareTheMeerkat · 18/04/2009 23:59

Because your child sees you doing it and asks if he/she can have some on as well and as you feel it really isn't doing any harm to anyone you put some on

ipodtherforipoor · 18/04/2009 23:59

My 4yr old DS loves his navy blue polish!

the ds's queue up for theirs

sometimes each toe different

why does it have to be good idea

we do it for fun!

ChasingSquirrels · 19/04/2009 00:05

my 3yo has been on at me for a few weeks to paint his fingernails (don't know why, I don't do my own), so the other day I did them.
Me: what colour?
ds2: pinky-red
ds1 (6.5y): pinky-red, pinky-red, EVERYONE will laugh at you, pinky-red is for girls.

...

As he chose a tan colour for his own .

Shitemum · 19/04/2009 00:06

I don't much like it but have done it.

I think adults think about the fact that make up is for grown up women not children. The children probably just put it in the same category as face-painting - i.e. it's fun.

MillyR · 19/04/2009 00:07

CS

If you black spots on over the red, then it looks like ladybirds, which is surely unisex?

MrsMerryHenry · 19/04/2009 00:07

Squirrels, your DS1 is hilarious!

ChasingSquirrels · 19/04/2009 00:09

ohhhh ladybirds, ds2 would LOVE that. Although it kept flaking off and he got so upset about it that I have taken it all off now

Plonker · 19/04/2009 00:10

Ah come on - where's the harm?

Dd's love to paint their toe-nails, there's nothing sinister about it. Agree with Shitemum - no different from face-painting ...

Portofino · 19/04/2009 00:10

My dd loves having her nails painted and lipstick and glitter on! As my nails are a disgrace and i don't wear much make up, I can only assume it is an inherant trait. Or that's what all the 4/5 years olds talk about at school

PhoenixFirefly · 19/04/2009 00:18

ds has been begging me to put more on him every time he sees the little bottle... really thouhg, where is the harm in it?

BibiThree · 19/04/2009 00:21

DD's nail polish obsession is one of the only girly things about her in amongst her trains and dinosaurs. No harm at all, she's allowed whatever colour she likes during the school holidays. They think it's fun, only sinister when the parent does it for their own benefit rather than the child's enjoyment.

Thunderduck · 19/04/2009 00:25

I don't like it either, but then I don't like nail varnish at all and wouldn't wear it.

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 19/04/2009 01:04

my 5 year old ds2 loves having his nails painted. His favorite is ladybirds but at the moment he just has plain blue on his toe nails and grey on his fingernails.

Technofairy · 19/04/2009 01:15

Ha ha!

My male boss confessed last week that his toe nails were painted pink by his three year old daughter. We just think he's fab now! What a guy!!

midlandsmumof4 · 19/04/2009 02:22

It can be removed . I personally wouldn't do it purely because I've never painted my own nails. (Not a girly girl]. However,my older sister painted my son's nails for him for him when he was about 3. OH was absolutely horrified, I thought it hilarious, son loved it (it was Christian Dior polish which probably explains his pananche for designer lables now .

DeathbyDora · 19/04/2009 02:30

My little girl LOVES it when I paint her nails. She's only 4 and it's such a huge treat for her I can't resist. We only do it once in a while though.

(Did get a bollocking from DH when our 2 yr old DS walked in on proceedings and demanded his nails be painted orange.)

Only stays on for a day or so as they just seem to scratch it all off. I don't think there's any harm!

chefswife · 19/04/2009 02:37

my only thing would be the LO's with their fingers in their mouths so much and eating the nail polish... but otherwise, its fun.

floppybits · 19/04/2009 07:33

totally agree can't stand children looking like little adults... for a bit of dressing up fun though...

SugarBird · 19/04/2009 08:39

My DS2 loved having his toenails painted when he was tiny - around two - if he saw me doing mine. One summer he had blue sparkly toes! Harmless, and it soon comes off.

TheMadHouse · 19/04/2009 08:46

Children only tend to emulate their role models and parents, so if you wear nail polish etc then they want to. Nothing wrong with a little bit, as long as they know it is a special thing.

When DS1 was younger he would often have painted nails, DS2 has never had them (since having two I never have the time to do them in front of them)

Remeber Behaviour breeds behaviour and it is up to you to instaill appropriatness in your own children. I would rather a little bit of nail polish than swearing or upthemselfness (if that is a word)

shootfromthehip · 19/04/2009 08:46

I do both my DD (5) and DS (2) and think that there is no harm in it as I do my own. I'm not sexualizing either of them and doubt that a bit of pale, chipped nailvarnish would encourage dubious thoughts in others either. Not a big deal IMO.

bubblagirl · 19/04/2009 09:01

i know many children of young age who like having nails painted i dont see any harm it looks nice there not in full make up its something mother and daughter enjoy doing together
