To not want my child to be the only child at school with a Swindon accent?

I know this thread will cause controversy and some people may accuse me of being accentist, but I'm really not, honest.

We have recently moved from Swindon to Reading (just a hop, skip and a jump up the road, really) and DS is about to start secondary school. However I'm extremely concerned that he'll be in a minority as all the other children will speak with Reading accents. I don't want my child to go to a school with only Reading-speaking children. AIBU?

Um, what?

Wiltshire to Berkshire?

Are you serious?

I moved from Northumberland to Oxfordshire at the age of 13 and my accent really was the least of my worries.

If your DS does have a 'different' accent it'll be gone by the end of the first term anyway.

DisasterEggs · 18/04/2009 21:55

I have nephews in Swindon and a niece in Reading and I thought they have the same accent.

I'm Scottish so I need subtitles for you lot.

geordieminx · 18/04/2009 21:57

I'm a geordie, dp is scouse, we live in Glasgow... go figure that accent out.

DisasterEggs · 18/04/2009 21:58

also i'd just be very thankful that i no longer lived in swindon and count my belsings. with any luck they'll soon lose the swindon accent and start talking like normal people ASAP.
again. YABU

OrmIrian · 18/04/2009 21:58

Oh dear.

Really? That worries you?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 18/04/2009 21:59

Call it a Thames Valley accent and no one will bat an eyelid...

Or say you're from Marlborough

Wilts · 18/04/2009 22:00

But surely he'll be picked on by all the Reading kids for being different? I'm sure Reading teens grunt differently from us Swindies. How on earth will he fit in??

Stewie, thanks for your support. Do you think we might be able to get support from the UN? I'm really worried.

Just make sure he gets a ridiculous haircut then people will take the piss out of him for that instead of his accent.

MrsMerryHenry · 18/04/2009 22:10

Chequers, that's genius. I feel so much better.

Tell them that you're related to Billie Piper

Habbibu · 18/04/2009 22:11

They'll see him as exotic and glamorous.

MrsMerryHenry · 18/04/2009 22:13

Ooh, Swindon is right glam, that's for sure. Glam-slam. Thanks, Habs.

I live in swindon but my family were born in Reading. Both accents aren't great. Swindon is very vicky pollard and reading used to be quite distinct but now seems a spill over from 'mockney' london ish.

If you live in Caversham I could see it being a problem but if you stick to whitley then I'm sure you'll fit in fine...

muppetgirl · 18/04/2009 22:18

swindon and glamorous really are 2 words I would never put in the same sentence!
