To go out and Buy DS a fish tank for his birthday?

even though DH doesn't want me to. He thinks we have enough to cope with already.

We have owned fish in the past and DH never did anything with them only me, so I don't understand his problem.

Child will be thrilled for all of 5 minutes and then pretty much forget about fish (in my experience, Lynette).

How old is he going to be?

cory · 17/04/2009 11:28

why not if you are prepared to do the work and your ds understands that it takes time to set up a tank (unless you can clone from somebody else's filter)

LynetteScavo · 17/04/2009 11:29

He'll be 6.

I really, really want a fish tank.....I'm off now with DD, just to look at them.

oh come on, just accept that you want one

we currently have six in the house and everybody knows that they are to keep mummy happy (dcs went off them very quickly)

muggglewump · 17/04/2009 11:35

If you want one, get one.
We have one and DD does feed the fish but I do the rest. It's no trouble at all though.

She did once clean the tank with washing up liquid when she was about two and killed them all but she's never done that again!

I was going to get her a hamster for easter but didn't as she'd been misbehaving but she will get one for her birthday in August and I fully accept I'll probably do all the care. I am prepared to do his though or I wouldn't consider it.

So long as you are prepared to do the same for the fish then go ahead

heverhoney1 · 17/04/2009 11:49

What kind of fish do you want our brackish tropicals are no bother at all and they come and waggle at the front of the tank when they are hungry -ahhhh

Jackstini · 17/04/2009 11:51

Depends if ds wants one or if it's just you?
If he is not bothered then I would still say get one if you really want - but not for his birthday when it is really a pressie for you!

LynetteScavo · 17/04/2009 12:04

He does want fish - but he'd rather have a dog

cory now I get your nickname! I took me 3 weeks to cycle our tank, because I did it fishlessly with ammonia etc. Everyone laughed at me because I was taking it so seriously!

We bought DS1 a tank for his 7th Birthday and haven't looked back. Through much experimentation we have just kept it simple - zebra danios and some lovely neon tetras.

I have literally just been doing a water change, and DS1 always helps me. He has been asking for a bigger tank, but our problem is where to put it.

Lynette If you know what's involved, I'd say go for it.

whoisasking · 17/04/2009 15:38

I love the fish tank I bought for my DS's Xmas pressie.

To be fair, he's picked all the fish and feeds them in the morning, but I do everything else, and I get great satisfaction from it. I have a marine tank, which is fairly labour intensive, but TOTALLY worth it.
I feel that my boys are learning a lot from it.

glitterchick · 17/04/2009 15:57

You should totally buy the fish tank. Very exciting. Let us know how it goes. I would love dog but DH won't allow.

LynetteScavo · 17/04/2009 17:29

Well I've bought a tank....I'm going to let DS help set it up, and then go and choose the fish when it's readyrahter than jsut do it all for him. I'm not going to tell DH, and he won't be able to say anything when DS opens it and is chuffed.

Great Lynette Did you get a tropical tank? How big?

LynetteScavo · 17/04/2009 18:07

No, it's a cold water tank, but it's massive and very funky.
